cm123, thanks, I am glad to see there other fat, out of shape, old (my self) guys on safari. Some posters think if you are not in marathon shape you have no business on safari. Or you are just serving your ego by shooting many, many buffalo etc.

I wish everyone would go hunting regardless of their physical abilities.

It is their choice, and their money.

Someone who is not in shape will not get as much enjoyment of his hunt as those who are fit.

But, that is really besides the point.

The point here is why make a commercial hunting show with someone who is obviously out of shape, and by the sounds of things, ignorant about hunting as well?

Getting back to the main message of this post - many hunting shows are mediocre. I do think the shows that focus on Africa are worth watching:

I also think Tom Miranda and Jim Shockey produce good stuff.

I know Tim Wells quite well. There was no drugging of buffalo or any other shenanigans.

We were accused (here) of tying a buffalo to a tree when they hunted with us in 2008.

In that case, that is one hell of a stealthy approach! And it takes balls big enough to come in a dump truck to get that close to a buff. I have heard stories from PHs about naive foreign hunters taking drugged animals. I do not know if there is truth to it, or if it is just that - stories.

i recently spent 14 days hunting buffalo with Tim, me as guide. Tim is an excellent stalker.

Maybe so the watcher takes enough from the show to a.) get in decent shape, b.) to educate himself at least a little on hunting, and hunting in Africa in particular.

I've elephant hunted - arguably the most physically demanding of the typical safari hunting - in very good shape and not so good shape. You are correct that it is a heck of a lot more fun when you are in good shape, and your chances for a successful safari improve considerably compared to hunting when fitness is an issue as well.

[As an aside, I'm now in horrible shape, and looking to resume elephant hunting, with my son - which is a great motivator to getting back in shape.]

The catch 22 for some or many is that the activity which allows them to afford to go hunting in Africa is intensely time consuming and no help in the fitness department, coupled with the real world family time requirements - at least that is my excuse....

All in all, better to hunt fat than not hunt, eh?
