Jerry HooverOff to Namibia
We are off to Namibia Sunday AM. We will be hunting with Dirk Rohrman in his new concessions. The SCI Blue Bags are ready to go and are filled to the brim with educational supplies for the visually impaired kids in Namibia. I will try to post pictures from Namibia or on our return. Critters beware, the 8mm mag is dialed in. Jerry Hoover

Jerry Hoover+God willing and I can shoot straight, I expect to get 2 oryx. Eland is a prime target as well as leopard, Hartman's mountain zebra, springbok, waterbuck, black wildebeest, and a blue wildebeest for a rug. Every day will a new experience as I have no set agenda. Some of the little fellas such as klipspringer, jackal, caracal/serval,duiker, and steinbuck are becoming more appealing as time draws near. I have a 54.5 inch kudu and will only take another if it noticibly larger or is extremely wide (I like those) Hartebeest are so ugly that only a mother could love them, but if a
n extraordinary one comes along, who knows? Dirk has some good waterbuck and after passing up a 30+ incher in RSA(couldn't afford the trophy fee at that time), if a good one shows himself---watch out. JJ_ Miller asked about the 8mm mag load. I am shooting 220 Swift A-frames with a load of RL22 powder 1.5 grains under max. This may not be safe in your rifle. Start at the minimum load and work up as per the Swift manual. My wife is coming along and several months ago, when I asked her if she wanted to come, she waffled. So being of practical mind, I bribed her. It took only 2 words-gold/diamonds. Works every time! Life is good when you are going to Africa. Jerry Hoover

scruffyGood luck on your safari, Jerry !!

Of all the animals that you mentioned - it is the caracal and serval that get me really excited. I would actually throw rocks at a 55" kudu to get it to move away so that I could shoot either one of those cats !! (And none of my kudu are even close to 55" ...) I've muffed a couple opportunities over the years on caracals and have never even seen a serval .. Come to think of it .. the last wildcat that I saw in Namibia came running by me one evening and when he didn't stop - well, I missed him three times with my 323 Hollis Magnum .. 200 grain Nosler partitions with 70 grains of 4350 ... Hmmm ... Perhaps if the load had been a bit hotter I might have shot the little varmint !!!

Cheers !

I would be interested in Dirk's new concessions. I would like to talk to you when you get back. I am taking my family to Namibia in 2008. Dirk is one of my choices. I spoke to him and his wife on the phone. We are looking at going for 21 days, mostly hunting and a couple days in Etosha and Swakopumd. I did not go to any of the conventions and did not get to meet any of the Namibian Outfitters.

Best of luck to you Jerry. I know you will enjoy every minute you are there - and I'll be eagerly awaiting your trip report when you get back. Please give our regards to Dirk and that lanky blonde lady that tolerates him!
