NitroXAffairs on Safari - Hollywood or reality?
Just finished watching "Mogambo" a couple nights ago and of course there was the movie the "Macomber Affair" as well. Then we had randy Bunny Allen's book "The Wheel of Life" where he tried to claim wives and daughters were open season on safari. Bror Blixen was another.
Was this sort of behaviour more a Hollywood fiction or confined to the past, like the "Happy Valley Set"?
Does it happen today?

Mickey1I have a friend who took his wife to Namibia. She had an affair with the PH and the PH even followed her back here. My friend found out when he came over.
A divorce followed with the PH being named. My friend never recieved his trophies either.
Only the PH got one, a trophy.
27 April 2006, 09:11
500grainsI have seen a couple of PHs who adorn themselves with far too many necklaces and bracelets and may enjoy spending their free time with the younger male staff. Pics of one such PH have been posted here.

I am amazed that it goes on. Tempers mixed with firearms and maybe alcohol. Not a good mix!
I alluded to the following in a joke to Ganyana on another thread recently. On my first safari to Zimbabwe, it actually was my honeymoon, the PH around the campfire one evening, in a joke, winked at my wife. The funny thing is I didn't even notice it nor care if I did, but he immediately got all apologetic as if he had transgressed some line.
Maybe a past incident taught him something?

I know a client (a Spanish one) once shot off his hat from behind, leasing a bloody crease along his scalp from the bullet! Enthusiastic Spanish hunter after lion or a warthog, or a husband?!

(PS I am only joking about this PH as there was never any suggestion of anything untoward with the Spanish client except for the Spanish guys dangerous firearms handling. Merely used the story to illustrate my first paragraph.)

ForrestBI know a apprentice PH who had a safari fling with a client's girlfriend. The client was a Russian mobster. This stuck me as an outrageously stupid thing to do. The PH later rendezvoused with the girl in Europe - maybe an even dumber thing to do.

ErikDI have the impression that a PH or two has even tried to pick up hunters wives at the big shows in Dallas and Reno. I'm sure others here who have frequented these shows can tell us more.
So I'm sure there are sleezy PH's out there that will try just about anything, regardless of the consequences, and look upon clients wives and daughters as "fair game"...

lawndartSeen it happen on River rafting trips and guided fly-fishing float trips over the years. Why screw up hunting and fishing just over some coochie?????????? Why do girls throw away a very profitable marriage over a fling in the wilderness????
Back when I was married a class 3 manufacturer came on to my spousal unit. She was not blameless. I told them both that that type of behavior was just fine, but I wasn't going to subsidize it. How stupid. He threw away a moderate sized contract. I had already decided to get rid of her. By interfering with work she just moved up the time table.
Girls with personality disorders and/or bipolar can look very attractive in the short run (not to mention boinking like the act is oxygen itself). If you glom onto one, however, you deserve what you get (don't I know).
This is a little OT, but I just remembered another important point. Don't ever mary a drop dead gorgeous woman. You will have to spend the rest of your life running off the satellite bulls making a run at her. Trophy? Hardly.

Robert johnsonOn my first African hunt in 94, The outfitter and his PH had a motto " We will not sleep with your wife when your in the bush". A few months later I heard the PH knocked up a clients daughter!
I bet they will remember that hunt !

Mickey1I understand a well known PH on this site tried to get cozy with a client's wife in Dallas this year.
Also heard an interesting story about a famous writers's daughter being the dessert for an apprentice PH in Zim recently. You never know though how much is truth and how much is wishful thinking.

Let's not forget Patterson of Tsavo fame. The client was shot under mysterious circumstances and the good Colonel departed Kenya with the Merry Widow.

The story behind the 'Macomber Affair'.
Wasn't there a famous PH from Kenya or Tz. who married a clients wife about 10 years ago?

I know of a PH in RSA who did.

404WJJefferyWorks both ways. My friend/PH let me know that he has had a few wives/GFs come on to him........!
I have worked a lot in Russia and nailing a mobster/businessman's (all businessmen in Russia are criminals BTW- how do you think some guy who is 35 or 40 went from a net worth of zero before the breakup of the USSR to then have 10 mil, 100 mil or 10 billion?)
excuse the long aside, messsing with a Russian's girl is really crazy behaviour! Death warrant.

Bwana1I had a friend ( now deceased ) that took his daughter on a safari. She ran off with the black tracker and is still with him today....

dogcatI took the risk of taking my wife and 20 yr old daughter to Zim last year along with my sons for a 2 week trip. The PH assigned to my oldest son was a very handsome, worldly, fun type of guy - lots of stories, lots of laughs. My daughter was smitten as you can imagine. I joked one night around the campfire that I am a lousy shot and would likely wound him if he even had "thoughts" about my daughter. It would be classified as "death by pain". He laughed and assured me he had a girlfriend and had not such thoughts. He got the message.
Just to be safe, I had my daughter sleep in a twin bed between her two brothers in camp as well as she hunted with another PH while the good looking PH and my son tramped all over the hills looking for sable. They were tired at night.
All went well and I suspect no damage was done, but I know men and I know girls - people tend to get a little wild when in a wild place.
I had not worries about my wife as she has made it very clear that if I step out of line, I would be shot first then the 3rd party. She said I can hold her to that standard as well.
I just hope that the camp staff (wives of ph's and others) are old and bedraggled when I go next time with older sons.
So far, so good......

I bet that just then and there was when the immortal phrase "not-to-me, bwana !" was first heard !!!!

Now, seriously and regarding all types of relations, if both parties acted by the means of common agreement and at their own will, we can only wish them to be happy

, whether being previously singles or married ... the only thing that we can do is to teach our youths to act smartly and later on to assume the consequences of their own acts...
As for our wives, I think it is only a question of knowing how to choose them properly ... and to keep them pleased and satisfied

GAHUNTERHmmmmm..... I was thinking about booking Cindy Garrison for a hunt next year.
The way I see it, no matter which one of us the PH goes after, I win! (as long as I get to watch!)

(If my wife ever sees this post, I'll deny ever having even heard of AR!)

That would make a great article!
However, I suspect that most of these stories are just B.S. and the product of an overactive imagination of bored PHs during the off season while sitting around in a bar.

DonatoDo you think I could trade my girlfriend for a night or two for an extra buffalo permit?
Probably not a very good idea as I would have to pay her air fare over to Africa in the first place. Air fare $2,000 - Buff permit $1,200. Well maybe two permits then.

AntonioI know of a PH that had an affair with a client´s wife in a leopard blind.
I also know of the inverse case of the wife of a guide in Canada having an affair with a client.
In my opinion, it is not a good idea to hunt in Africa with wifes, daughters and girlfriends.

SpringIt's also interesting to hear PH's tell of significant others coming on safaris while the unknowing wife remains at home. This is not a rare event at all, as I have been told.
One fellow brings 2 prostitutes with him on each of annual 21-day safaris. Another interesting story was when a fellow took his girlfriend on his safari and did not advise his safari company she was not his wife. The safari company's annual magazine, filled with pictures from the season's hunts, comes out at the end of the year. It was sent to the hunter's home. His wife opened it first and had a rude awakening!

NitroXTalking about "significant others".
A story I was told of an Italian client that used to bring two cameras, one for the family and one for him and the girlfriend.
Supposedly he used to get quite upset if the PH "accidently" tried to take a photo of him with the mistress with the wrong camera.

loud-n-boomerIt does happen, I met my wife on a photo safari in Kenya; the most dangerous and expensive trophy I have ever bagged.
On the same trip, the guide took up with another one of the clients.

Hmmm, I’m sure it’s not only Italians who likes lots of cameras, or thinks that their secretary is much needed even during vacations
Perhaps the “Family trips†should be booked with a female ph and staff

How many female ph’s are there?

Flirting with clients is not professional and Casanova tendencies among staff or guides/ph’s are completely unacceptable

465H&HAs a hunter it is highly unlikely that you will have the oppurtunity to get in trouble while on safari. The oppurtunities just aren't there unless you swing both ways. But do you ever wonderwhat oppurtunities your wife has at home while you are gone for three or four weeks?

Almost the same ones they have while your at work for 48wks of the year.
I Suppose a woman is entitled to her own kind of trophies for mounting purposes.
Ideally this is what most Guys would like to see;
But After spending much time in the Bush, a PH image of an ideal woman could turn to this,
But this is probably more common;
But for the Guy who likes the baboon type,

justanothernorwegianWoodjack! LOL!!!
a few years ago a jourlanist made a story, think it was from a Lufthansa flight to Ghana. All the male passengers were informed that 70% of the prostitutes are infected with HIV/AIDS. Ont ther return trip they wre polled, and quite a few of them admitted to having had unprotected sex for money...

. I would guess that usually the PH is not the most prevalent sleezeball when it comes to hitting on women during safari...
28 April 2006, 21:24
kayakerThe terms flung about in the field guide/PH world is 'Kakhi Fever'...!
Most dangerous animal on safari....the willing/pushy clients/clients partner.
In fact, heard a story where a PH refused to engage in this and the lady, thusly insensed by this, actually got pissed off with him and told her husabnd the PH was hitting on her, to get back at him!
Another 'rural legend' was the team who posed as a married couple and half way through the hunt the 'wife' would be horizontal jogging with the PH only to be 'discovered' by the irate 'husband'. The demand...we can keep this quite but I am NOT paying you...free safari scam...true? I have heard it twice before.
Someone seen this on rafting trips???? NEVER

larryshoresI personally know a PH that had a fling with a clients wife. It probably was not the first time. The client was a very powerful European business man. The client found out about it. He put out a contract to kill the PH. The PH had to go into hiding in the bush ( and no, not the clients wife)for over a year. He told the PH's wife. He used every effort to find out things on the PH so he could wreck his life.
28 April 2006, 21:53
butchlocgosh and here I was about to book a hunt with cindy garrison on the hopes something like this would happen to my wifes spouse

Ted GorslineMany years ago in Kenya there was an Austrian count who used to sell sex safaris. This was in pre-Aids days and the entire camp staff was made up of young Somali girls all of whom were at the client's beck and call.
I don't know if they could track but he never got any complaints. His wife, the countess was a beautiful blonde woman who still appears on European television selling her wares.
The whole thing came to an end when the count was killed in a car accident.
