Allen, are these the Danners that you are referring to?


If so, we have the same taste in boots My only complaint, and I understand why you use them for the desert hunts, is that because of their low tongue design, water actually seeps in much lower than the top of the boot. Aside from adding a piece of Gore-tex, I have not been able to fix this problem and will now use them more for non-wet type or winter hunts.

I was thinking of buying a pair of Danner Canadians for some Canadian mountain hunting- any opinion on these?

I'm with you on this one!

I ordered a pair of Russell PHs last week from Cabela's and they arrived today. I'm wearing them around the house and they are very comfortable. I'll break them in during deer season so they'll be ready when I go to Africa in May.

UPDATE:

I tried all 3 pair, here is my opinion on each pair.

Danner Jackal


The sole is a bit thin for Africa. Didn't think they would be long-lasting boots. Also the sole was a bit stiff. Sent them back. [I just wore them around the house for a bit. Can't wear them outside and them return them].

Irish Setter


Well made and comfortable but noisy. The sole has a hollow sound (even when walking on carpet). Sent them back.

Danner Desert Eagle


Comfortable, not too heavy and have a ton of ankle support. Running shoe style sole that is comfortable and quiet. I decided to keep them. Maybe too much boot for Africa for some. I am going to wear them as my everyday boot.

Considering they are designed for the desert, I don't know that they would be any hotter than the full leather boots I usually wear. One would think, since they are desert boots, that they might be cooler.

Kangaroo leatherfeatherweights from Browning were my choice. Gore-Tex worked great, heel and sole were never harmed by thorns, 10" height gave good ankle support and was high enough to keep out seeds when wearing long pants. Kinda like high-top sneakers.

I'm with you on the ankle support, after my hunt in RSA I don't think I'll ever go anywhere without having boots without it. I had walking-type shoes, hiking boots and my Rocky outbacks, I always used the Rockys. There were so many rocks and crevasses I'm sure I would have twisted or sprained something without them.
If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the Danners? And I've heard Danners are "narrower" than other boots, what say you about that? Thanks Joe

The Danner Desert Eagles are true to fit (the Jackals were narrow).

I got them at AFMO. They have 10% off, free shipping and free socks. When you place the order it shows full price but enter "Boots on the Ground" in Special Instructions.

I did not get the 10% off or free shipping when they arrived. I called them and they said they would give me a credit back on my credit card. They did refund the overcharge on the day I called them. It took about 2 weeks to get them.

You might also try the Russell "Grand Slam Sheep Hunter" model...I have a pair and they have too much ankle support for my tastes!

Also consider that those Vibram "Sierra" soles are really noisy when stalking.

Courtney's are much quiter.

Those Danners you have been posting up might be your ticket if you can deal with the Gore-Tex in Africa...Some like it, some hate it - Ford-Chevy thing I suppose.
