Ernest Hemingway, et al - Who then?
Try Nyati- the art of hunting Buffalo by the African Hunter crew for a good "how to" book.

Best historical Hunting books- Bell (my father Godfather!- I have autographed editions of all his books) and Hunter.

For fiction- Stuart Cloete gets my vote. The stories that Wilber Smith wites about are usually based on historical fact- only the fact is so much more interesting (though the "Fact's" do not have sexy blonds waiting to drop their kit off at any moment!)

The Russell Annabel Series is a great read as is Fred Webb, both of which cover Alaska and North America.

You cannot go wrong with Robert Ruark, Use Enough Gun, Horn of the Hunter, and the classic, The Old Man and the Boy. It gets better everytime you read it. I think he is one of the most quoted authors in regards to hunting Africa.

Walt Prothero has a couple of interesting reads also (Safari A Dangerous Affair).

The danger of civilization, of course, is that you will piss away your life on nonsense

Ruark will always be my favorite. Hemingway, Capstick, etc. are all great it their own ways but only Ruark writes in a way that captures my own thoughts. His work comes closer to the way I think than anyone of any genre that I've ever read. Would have loved to have shared a bottle with that man.
