Gwayi new farmer appears in court

NEW farmer Langton Masunda appeared before a Hwange magistrate on Friday last week facing poaching charges for allegedly killing animals with an estimated value of $150 million without a permit, it has been learnt.



He was remanded out of custody to August 31 on $2 million bail.

The poaching allegedly took place at a farm he was allocated by the State during the just concluded land reform programme in the Gwayi-Conservancy area.

Masunda (41) appeared before Hwange magistrate Ms Ailene Madzorera last Friday to answer six counts of poaching.

He is being charged with contravening Section 38 (1) (a) as read with Section 2 of the Wildlife and Parks Act, Chapter 20:14 — hunting any animal in a safari area without a permit.

Public prosecutor Mr Sifelumusa Fuzane told the court that Masunda, who lives at Volunteer Farms 47, 48 and 49 in Gwayi and one of the directors of the farm unlawfully and intentionally hired a professional hunter called John Marira to shoot six different animal species.

The prosecutor said that on a date extending from April 20-28, the accused granted Marira permission to hunt a male buffalo at Lugo Farm, knowingly that he had no quota in respect of the farm.

During the same period, the accused granted the hunter authority to kill a baboon.

Masunda is said to have further granted Marira permission to hunt a female zebra, a male sable, a male buffalo and a male elephant.

According to the Gwayi Conservancy rates compiled by the Lupane Rural District Council, a male buffalo is valued at US$2 500, baboon (US$30), zebra (US$800), male sable (US$3 000) and elephant (US$10 000).

However, the total value of the animals according to the court is estimated to be $150 million.

I hunted in Gwayi in '04. Great area but not a day went by that I didn't see evidence of poachers snares and such. Hwange Park Hotel was deserted. Such a beautiful treasure squandered.

Yeah, $150 million Zim dollars equates to about $12USD. Pretty cheap hunting, IMO.

So the Gov attributes a value of US$18,830 to those species. The court attributes a value of US$428 (Z$150million) and the guy is let off with US$5 (Z$2 million) bail Eeker
