Police in Masvingo have urged the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority to urgently deal with the ballooning population of elephants following the trampling to death last week of a man near the boundary between Chiredzi and Zaka.
Villagers have of late been living in constant fear of losing their lives, crops and property to freely roaming herds of elephants.
Masvingo police spokesman Inspector Phibion Nyambo yesterday said they were going to engage the Parks Authority on ways of reducing the elephant population in southern Zaka and northern Chiredzi.
Last week, a 61-year-old man from Dawlish Farm in Lot 1 resettlement area was trampled to death by a herd of elephants he encountered on his way to work.
Nicholas Parafini was found dead by two teenagers returning from school. Insp Nyambo confirmed the death.
"We are greatly concerned about the increasing number of cases of elephants killing people in Lot 1," he said. — HR.
