LHeym500Tanzania and vehicles
A long time ago I looked up TZ hunting regs, and I remember that it was illegal to shot unwounded game within 200 yards of a vehicle.
Is that still a reg? Is there a special exemption for bow hunters?
Am I misremembering?

MARK H. YOUNGWhen I hunted Tanzania we were returning to camp at almost dark when we saw a good kudu on our left. The PH said 'You MUST shoot from the truck" I said "We MUST dive on and stalk back". We did and got the kudu. So much for the 200 foot rule.

LHeym500Mr. Young all respect to you, and I would never hunt with him again. He and I would not have liked each other when we got back to camp.

This was early on in a 28 day safari with a highly regarded operator. It was the only safari I've been on that really wasn't great. The shooting from the truck thing was only the beginning.

LHeym500We can leave it at that. I appreciate the responses. If it is worth anything to you, I appreciate how you handled it.

Good example of when on safari you implement and enforce your own rules and standards.

LHeym500Except the PH was actively trying pressuring a hunter to break a law. A law that is to prevent animals from being harassed by gasoline engine.

Michael RobinsonThey will do that sometimes. I believe that is Andrew’s point.

My point is it is unacceptable and needs to stop. I had no issue with Fairgame’s observation.

It has nothing to do with being harassed by a gasoline engine, more likely applicable to ethical hunting standards, like giving the quarry a chance.
Moving on down the road a couple of hundred yards then back-tracking on foot is hunting the animal instead of getting out of the vehicle, putting up the sticks or shooting over the bonnet.
If the target is in among a herd, shooting from the vehicle or its immediate vicinity will likely cause the survivors to recognize the sound and/or the image of any vehicle and associate it with death. Reason why animals in a hunted area are often seen to be raising dust when the vehicle comes into view.

Yes sir, and you are 100percent correct. I am just tired. I do appreciate the precession.

lavacaNever would shoot from a vehicle, legal or not. Once you bail out of the vehicle, the 200 yard rule is hard to judge sometimes. You're not looking or ranging backwards.

I agree with you
I am not asking anyone to use a tape measure, just follow the law. I am not going to chin kick anyone over 10 yards. But do not spray water in my face and tell me its raining. We all know the point and purpose. Cheat the animal, break the law, for the book and measurements and we all are diminished.

Or those in a wheelchair?

georgeldOR those of us that can barely walk 50 feet sometimes. still, get out and let 'em drive on down the road. IF getting out hasn't spooked 'em off.
Saeed: another pm, on a different subject I have questions about. Thank you for the reply.

The same people who drafted the law will make concessions for such cases - I have witnessed this personally on 2 occasions where one client was paralyzed waist down and the other was "walking" with an oxygen tank strapped on his back.

What I understand is these "laws" were made years ago, including others which might be irrelevant today.
A Tanzanian friend of mine mentioned some of these "laws" to the game department.
And the answer he got was "if we applied these rules, there won't be much hunting done here"!
Go figure!
