I missed a 40 incher Oryx....
Hey gang!

One year ago to the day I shot this fine Oryx on my first trip to Africa! There's not a day that goes by that I don't dream of going back soon...

Not one who goes only by the #'s but one who looks first for a quality hunt, I missed this Oryx Bull by a few millimeters....hehehe

He measured out at 101cm [39.8 inches]and he was a dandy!

We waited him out for what seemed like hours... Smiler

Shot him with my Mauser 98 30-06 180gr NP @ about a 140 yds...One shot through him and he went down hard at 30 yds....

It was a real great FIRST trip with my then 19 yr old son to Namibia...We shot 12 fine trophy animals...

We plan to go back to Namibia but this time up Northeast to Bushmanland for a different type of experience...

For now we'll keep on dreaming and planning for our next trip in 2011...The anticipation and level of excitement just keeps me burning with PASSION!!!

Just thought I'd share what's been burning in my heart!

Aloha!

LB,

Regardless of what you read 36"-37" is a good representative oryx bull. 38" and up is excellent and over 40" is very big. Your bull is realy nice and in most areas you will look long and hard to find a larger one.

Good show!

Mark

A very fine Oryx indeed!!!! I don't own a tape measure, and if I did I wouldn't know how to use it proper! I just sorta estimate when I show my wife what 6 inches is!!!!!!
shocker

Thanks folks for replies...it seems like only yesterday that I was there... Wink

Before I left I was forewarned that once I go to Africa I would be forever bitten by the bug!

The saying goes TRUE as most of us here well know... Wink

If Sable were everywhere, and the Oryx was very limited in it's range (like the Sable is now), you would see extremely high prices for Oryx, they are that beautiful.

Yep...I agree...They're very beautiful and regal animals themselves and why they're Namibia's National Symbol indeed... Wink

39.8? I don't know anyone who wouldn't "round up"--and I sure don't know anyone who would care. You're much too honest. What a great trophy! Well done!

hehehehehe... Big Grin

Thanks a bunch sir I appreciate it!!!

Hunting is all so new to me and my 19 yr old son as we only started hunting a year prior to this trip...Here in Hawaii we started just hunting feral sheep, hogs, and goats and then we went straight to THE BIG LEAGUES of travelling to Africa for plains game...At 46 yrs old I got involved with hunting only as a father & son sporting adventure! We have been richly rewarded since as it has added so much more quality experiences to our relationship!

Our dream is to be able to hunt Africa again and again together as a Father/Son Team....Creating memories afield has changed our lives in a most special way!

We have begun to document our Hunting Adventures to be a source of encouragement to others who seek to do the same!

Hunting Africa has changed our lives forever!!!

Aloha!

Roland - You are very fortunate! Congrats on my dream gemsbok bull! I have wanted to hunt Africa my whole life and I just sent my deposit for Namibia 2011 this week. I wanted to hunt with my son but college demands come first. Keep making those memories with your son they are priceless. Now how are you ever goning to top that bull?!

They are MAGNIFICENT animals indeed...since I was hunting with my son I decided since he was planning on taking one himself thatI's choose some different animals other than a few of his just to give us more variety...

But once the plane hit the ground and not more that 2 hrs into our drive to our property I saw quite a few Oryx up-close as we travelled the gravel roads...

It was then and there I changed my mind in an instant...In fact it an animal I want to hunt heavily on every succeeding trip...They are smart and they take a bullet all too well...They make a tough hunt and good bullet placement is critical as always... Big Grin
