450 Rigby
Mate of mine is getting a big hammer and this is what he has chosen.

Anyone got an opinion of this calibre?

Darn capable rifle, that's for sure. Look through the threads there was one recently debating the 450 Dakota and the 450 Rigby.

I like the 450 Dakota a lot and there is no practical difference between the two. Brass costs more for the Rigby... 'bout it though.

All of the big .45's will do the same thing. No buffalo in the world (nor killer whale, for that matter) will ever be able to tell the diffence whether it was hit by a Rigby, a Dakota, a Lott, or whatever. I like the Rigby because it has more panache, IMO, that the others. However, you can get more mag capacity from the Lott and the cases are cheaper on the Dakota. Ya' pays yer money and takes yer cherce. In all cases you get a genuine big hammer that knocks buffalo DOWN and should give jumbo such a crick in the neck.

Sarge, you said it, one of the new big cartridges I really like...an interesting ( and classic ) alternative, with about the same horsepower is perhaps the .505 Gibbs?
