338 Lapua in Africa?
338 Lapua in Africa?
Anyone ever take a Accuracy International or Sako TRG rifle in 338 Lapua to Africa?
Thought it would be kind of fun on a plains game hunt.
338 Lapua would be absolutly amazing on big game in the open like the Kalahari, Masailands, or the South African veldt.

PSmithDakota makes rifles in .338 Lapua also. I think a Dakota Traveler in .450 Dakota/.416 Rigby/.338 Lapua would be a dam nice setup for African hunting.

Johnny ZanniSince the .338 Laupa is a military sniper caliber wont there be some places in Africa where it is not allowed?

PhoenixdawgI am sure it would be a great caliber, but what would happen to your hunt if for some reason your ammo never showed up.

You could then throw your an animal and hope you connect!

It's a great cartridge IMHO. Can't see why it wouldn't be effective -- barring the loss of your ammo en route.......

UltraMagTook my Sako TRG-S in 338 Lapua on a Namibian PG Hunt.
AWESOME results all bang flops from springbok to Giraffe.
It accounted for several springbok, four Kudu, 2 Blue Wildebeest, Waterbuck, 6 Gemsbok, giraffe and 5 warthogs thats all I can remember at this point but it may well have been on others just cant remember off the top of my head at the moment.
Damn good rifle and caliber no complaints from me.

390ishI have a muzzle brake on my 995. Bad idea. I thought about taking for plains game in September, but I don't want to loose my hearing (have shot it twice hunting w/o hearing, never again) and I don't expect everyone on the hunt to fool with hearing protection, especially me.
I did work up a very good load with the Barnes 225 TSX with about about 97 grains of H-1000. It shoots a little better than H4831. All I have shot with the round is deer and groundhogs. It is a real barn burner.

UltraMagAloha Blair,
I was using 210 gr TSX and 200 gr Accubond's.
Was actually planning on using the 210 TSX just for the Giraffe but I ended up using it on one blue wildebeest,A Gemsbok, two Kudu the Giraffe and a couple of Wartie's. And also used it on about 8 Black-backed Jackal's.
Used the accubond for the rest.
Happy Hunting!!!

I am so sick of this argument! This could be said of just about all but a half dozen or so cartridges and all wildcats. Give it a rest, Saeed seems to do fine with his wildcat in Africa.

UltraMagAloha Blair,
You will be fine mate I used a 338 RUM on my very first trip to namibia and it accounted for a whole bunch of PG animals.
I was using 180 gr NBT's on that trip all bang flops as well.
Good hunting!!!

Michael RobinsonNever saw anything I wanted to shoot that my .338 Win. Mag. would not reach out and kill, as long as I did my part.
The allure of these monster .338s (and .300s for that matter) has always been lost on me.

mrlexma,
In a very pragmatic sense, from a hunting viewpoint, I agree, there is nothing a 338WM won't do.
But the 338RUM is definitely more accurate...whether that counts for anything is up to each shooter and hunter.
The attraction for me with a 338RUM is the same as a sportscar, it just is more fun. And it is more flexible for powder than a 338WM...... there is a wider selection of slow burning powders out there, so it is in my opinion a more versatile round than the 338WM and, you can always load it back.
