Len HawkinsTrophy shipments
I am planning a trip with my family to Namibia to hunt. Do you have to ship and clear seperate crates for each hunter, or can you just have one per family shipped and cleared? We are hunting plainsgame, and i would hope to have a couple of zebra, 2 oryx, kudu, eland, and some smaller trophies as well.
What is the best way to arrange freight, from what I've read hear, the shipping and clearing costs can vary significantly. Are shipping charges calculted strictly by weight? Can i ship and clear into Detroit, or does it have to go through New York or another port?
I would suggest you select a taxidermist who routinely imports foreign shipments and work with him. He will give you tags and paperwork to take to your PH so that everything can be shipped to the taxidermist. You can ship trophies from several hunters together to reduce shipping costs, as long as everything is labeled properly and covered in the documents. The clearing costs are done by person, but for my shipments those have been small compared to the shipping. I have done this 3 times and everything worked fine. As far as I know, the shipping charges are based on volume, not weight. The shipment can be cleared through any US port with a customs office. Mine come into Denver. Hope this helps.
Put one hunter's name on all the trophies to be shipped, then they can be shipped in one box and cleared easier.

Tim HeraldIf you use D&l in Chicago, Lisa has it down how to combine shipments. She has done it for us a number of times with no problems. Wouldn't be hard to ship to you from there. She has trucks going to MI to the tannery all the time.

farbedoI can second D&L.
Very easy to deal with, and know their stuff. They cleared my and my father's trophies no issues last fall.
They cleared the trophies and shipped them to the tannery my taxidermist recommended.
I had to do exactly nothing save pay them at the end of the month.

Len HawkinsI had never heard of d&l- I used fauna and flora years ago and felt like i got mugged on the price. I think it was because they cleared in New York and i got hit for shipping cross country to Denver.
