NATURE conservation officials in the North have shot and killed two elephants that villagers described as problem animals.
The villagers claimed that three elephants had destroyed mahangu fields at villages such as Otatashe, Oshaatahe and Oshanashongete, some 150 kilometres east of Ondangwa.
An official at the Eengodi constituency office, Andreas Amukoshi, told The Namibian that the three elephants arrived in the area on April 19 and stayed there until May 29 when nature conservation officials shot two of them. The third elephant fled in the direction of the Kavango Region.
Amukoshi said although the people were happy that the two elephants were killed and that they got the meat to eat, they were worried about not having mahangu reserves for future use. They will now depend on Government food relief, the villagers said.
