We have very much the same scenario here - most snakes would rather retreat than confront, the possible exception being a puffadder. Puffadders often don't give way. The general belief is that they are too lazy, but I don't know. Maybe they just like to bite. And a puffadder will bite without doubt, once anything is within striking distance. One does hear grand tales about being chased down by mambas etc, but the truth of the matter is that in the vast majority of cases the snake is just trying to get away. Like the vast majority of wild animals will try and do.

Dr. Tim BurkhartDavid,
Are there going to be buggers like that in my tent in Mahenye? If so, tell Amos to get down there and clear that place out. I won't have time to watch for snakes with Jonathan pushing me 24/7 for that 80 pounder.
And to think that I have been in that very office once.....your parents were great hosts by the way!

David HulmeDr Tim,
Maybe one of those buggers, or one of these, who knows...
I will pass on your message to Amos. When is your hunt?

Dr. Tim BurkhartDavid,
I'll be at Nina and Jonny's in Harare on May 11 and then in camp at Mahenye on the 12th. My hunt runs the 13th through the 28th of May.
By the way, the world is getting smaller. Ivan and Ashleigh live about an hour from me here in Michigan.
I hope to come by Hammond and see your folks at least one day while I am in Zim, provided the tusker is down before I have to head home.

UplandhunterI have trained my daughter well "The best kind of snake is a dead snake" my son has gone to the dark side and enjoys playing with them. Thank God no poisinous snakes in our area.
