2PIPE...would you like to elaborate a little about your experience with those calibers on elephant..?

What .600 are you shooting..?

I like and use the 500 more because of the amount of walking/stalking
that is involved when hunting ele.

Our typical days involve 20-35kms!!! My 500's weigh between 10-11 lbs.

My 600 IS 14 lbs and is a VC. Ive taken 5 ele with it; 3 cows and 2 bulls.
It definitely hits them harder than the 500, although its penetration isn't quite as good. With mono metals it certainly gets the job done!!!!

If it wasn't for the weight, that calibre is what i would use all the time….

As for Calibres for Ele. I have seen my best results with a 425WR. Perhaps those results were due to the fact that that Rifle was so easy to use and put the shots precisely wjere they had to go. Not sure? But it always did the splendidly.
As for "ultimate game". I put them almost even with a tracking hunt of Lion.

Captain C.H. Stigand said it well:

" There is something so fascinating and absorbing about elephant hunting that those who have done much of it can seldom take any interest again in any other form of sport. It seems so vastly superior to all other big game shooting that, once they have surrendered themselves to it's charms, they cannot even treat any other form of hunting seriously. Everything else seems little and insignificant by comparison."

On my first ever ele hunt, Alan Shearing took me in on a huge solo bull, first time ever encounter with an ele, feeding undisturbed in the jesse. The approach was from the rear, wind was perfect, we stood about 10' from him for about a minute or so and then quietly backed out. This was Alan getting my feet wet before going to the deep end of the pool. For Alan, this was another day in the office; for me, an epiphany, a lightening bolt from the Heavens.

Words cannot describe the adrenaline rush, shook like a leaf afterwards.

It's been downhill ever since, I am a charter member of the local chapter of Elephant Hunters Anonymous Cool

ledvm has said it well.

As an aside: From 1988 to 2017 it has been my good fortune to have shot 20 elephant; and have been witness to more than a dozen other elephant shot with various calibers: .375H&H, .416 Taylor, .450Rigby,.458WM,.475 no2,.470, 500Jeffery, .505 Gibbs, and 500A2. I have never had the experience of seeing an elephant knocked off its feet from bullet impact. Lurch, slew sideways, sit down, buckle their knees, run and fall over, and drop stone dead from brain shots yes,but never knocked off their feet at impact. Must be quite a sight.

During my more active days of hunting, mainly in Tanzania, I would always ask my PH (George Angelides, Nicky Blunt, Gerard Ambrose, Mike Branham, Andre de Kock, Ronnie McFarlane):

If you had to pick one animal to hunt in Africa, what would it be? Not one of them even hesitated in their answer: Elephant.

Mirrors my experience exactly. Very DG PH I ever asked said the same thing-elephants- and I have to agree!
