Factory ammo for 458 Lott - Suggestions?
Hey guys. I am curious if you guys having any recommendations for factory ammo for the big bore. I have been shooting various ammo for practice, but need to settle on a good solid for a hunt this fall. Elephant is the target, along with buffalo. Also bringing my 375. I have had good luck with the Barnes TSX in the smaller gun, and will use them again. Please move if this in in the wrong forum.

Thanks

Hornaday is the most reasonable, for practice certainly. I'd pick the bullet you like and then find out who loads it.

There had been some controversy over the years about Hornaday softs, but I think that has been solved, and I've never heard of a problem with their solids.

Hornady factory ammo is tops.Get the solids only-the softs are too soft for the Lott.I used Hornady ammo(solids) to take two buffs and I was really impressed. They have alot of ``kick``needed to get the job done. The DGS bullet is tops also-well constructed and flat nosed too.

Since the 458 Lott is often considered a wildcat, it may not loaded by some top manufacturers.

I agree with Juanpozzi, it is great if you can buy it in tome for your hunt and get it sighted in. Expensive.

You might also try KYNAMCO sold by Midway, they would most likely use Woodleigh, which I like very much and had great success in Federal Premiums...don't know if Federal loads for the Lott?

Also, if Remington loads Safari Premium in Lott, the Swift is an outstanding bullet.

In my opinion Hornady is a bargain basement low end selection, not for my safari!!

Just looking at the Graf & Sons catalogue, they offer Hornady. Federal, and Norma, with several bullet options, in .458 Lott.

Flipper,

If elepahant is your goal, the Hornady solids are fine, next up would be Federal Premium with Trophy Bonded Solids -- those are my go-to solids, although Nosler solids work great too. It's pretty hard to screw up a solid bullet.

I've heard great things about North Forks.

Don't forget to consider custom ammunition loaders such as Safari Arms and Superior Ammunition.

They can do what ever you desire.

I am a big fan of North Fork and GS Custom when it comes to mono metal solids but I took my only bull elephant with a single 400 grain Woodleigh solid in 10.75x68 Mauser to the brain. I developed the load.

My favorite PH (Mr. Labat)likes the Federal Supreme with the Trophy Bonded Sledge Hammers.

Excellent choices, and I would like to add to that list Massaro Ballistic Laboratories

Fellows,

I appreciate all the good info. Looks like there are several good options available. I have checked with a couple of the custom reloaders, and it appears that you can get just about any bullet you like in their loads.

Thanks again.
