Kenya: Morans Kill Lion After Buffalo Kills Boy
By Raabia Hawa, 20 July 2012

Community unrest ensued in Amboseli over remarks by a Kenya Wildlife Service officer on the killing of a maasai boy by a buffalo. Over 400 Maasai Morans went on a hunting spree across the ecosystem following a breakdown of talks between the community and KWS management. KWS rangers were completely outnumbered, watching helplessly as the warriors swarmed around elephants hurling spears at them in Elarai.

Last week, a meeting was called between the community and the KWS director for last Monday. however, the director sent two board members and a community ranger instead. Trouble started when the community ranger blamed the residents for the death of the boy. Reports say ten bufalloes and a lion have since been killed. A 35-year-old elephant bull was speared to death, while ten elephants, including one of Amboseli's oldest bulls was badly wounded.

Two hundred warriors had last week gone on a simillar expedition following the death of the boy, klling a buffalo and wounding several elephants. News that Julius Kipng'etich, the KWS director, had agreed to meet the community calmed the the community, with elders ordering the morans to stop the ending. Amboseli National Park is an ecosystem of over two million acres, with most of the animals moving in and out of the unprotected areas where the Maasai community live.

According to Big Life Foundation, the rising conflict between the community and the animals is related to politics and revenue, which the local county council demanding a greater percentage of park revenue.

Throw in a bit of religion and you would have all the reasons for conflict covered.
