I put them on a leather belt not secured to my belt loops, so that I they can be right in the front and hang a bit lower than if belt loops are used. The belt buckle goes at my back. I like the leather flaps over the ammo because they keep the ammo out of the sun/rain and minimize dust. They also keep the ammo from scratching my stock.

I posed that question on this board a few months back - before my trip to Tanzania. I followed the advice of one of our members and bought a couple nylon belts with elastic loops from Uncle Mike's. The belts hold nearly twenty rounds (I'm too lazy to dig one out and count the loops). I loaded softs in the right half and solids in the left. I left a few empty loops in between. That way I never had to look down to know what I was loading. I carried two rifles - a .375 H&H and a .458 Lott. I had a loaded belt for each. They worked great. I found myself shooting two buffalo bulls at one time at 20 - 40 yds. requiring me to fire nine rounds and reload twice in under 60 seconds. I kept my eyes on the bulls at all times. The belts are, IMHO, the best option.

Ditto, mine is the canvas one. Don't leave home without 20 rounds. They are tough to find in the bush in case you need them.

I use either a 10 round Westley-Richards cartridge holder or the 8 round Murray cartridge holder. Africase also makes a nice cartridge holder.(see 500 Grains post) I however do not like the fold over cover. I do not want to look down to undo the cover, I just want to reach for my belt and touch the ammo. A cover does protect the ammo better but I believe the open top is faster. MUFASA

10 rounds on belt and gun full. If carrying double 2 more rounds in Keith style drop down upside down carrier. Sometimes another 5 rounds in pocket wallet. If I need more than that I use a stick.

Eight or ten rounds, depending on caliber, in a well broken-in, open-topped, Murray leather cartridge carrier threaded onto its own, wide, Murray leather belt.

Plus one in the chamber and a full magazine, of course.

That's between twelve and sixteen rounds, total, again, depending on caliber.

Fourteen to eighteen, if you also use the earring approach.

I use a leather cartridge carrier on my belt. This one holds 6 plus three in the magazine and one in the chamber when I'm on a stalk.

I'll also keep a plastic box of 20 in my backpak.

I tried a cloth "fold down" carrier with elastic loops last year hunting Pronghorn Antelope, and lost several cartridges.

On the Sunday morning "Divas" show on the Outdoor channel a while back, two of the divas were sighting in their rifles, and one of them said she had been in Africa and her PH had told her that spent cartridge case in your ears like Saeed showed in the above post made good hearing protectors.

Fjold, as another lefty, I decided to try your method. However, since I use Prep H at my age, they kept slipping out.

Seriously, I use the 10 rounder on the belt, full magazine, and have a wrist band that holds two on my right wrist. Gives me 16 rounds.

I am the odd man out, but I carry mine on my butt stock holder. I found out in Namibia, that one can extract rounds and load them on a dead run when necessary. Try that with carriers on your belt or pocket! Kudude

For my DR, I use a Murry's Leather 12 round ammo belt, made reversed for this lefty for my solids and a two round Africase holder which slides onto the Murry's belt for a pair of softs.

A Gerber multi tool seperates the belt's cartridge loops from the two round slide so I don't do something incredibly stupid like use a soft on an elephant - I used to keep the solids at one end of the belt and the softs at the other, but pulled a soft out of a chamber after an elephant walk once, to my horror.

No issues loading quickly or loading on the run.

Same for me except I used two cartridge carriers of eight rounds apiece, plus a topped off rifle for a total of 19 (in my Ruger 416 Rigby and 21 if I'm carrying my 375 H&H) . jorge

For multiple animal culls I like twenty round belts. Just reach down and pull the rounds from anywhere.

Otherwise the standard five or six round belt pouches, usually two of them.

Doesn't anyone use a shoulder bandolier anymore?

I have two 5 round Africase holders with a flap. As seen in the top picture Heritage Arms posted. This, combined with 5 rounds in the magazine, and 20 more carried in a trackers backpack was fine for me. I'd do the same again next time.

I'll also add that the leather and stitching quality of the Africase products are top notch. Probably the best I've ever seen or used.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I use an 18 round leather culling belt a friend gave me when I was in high school. Now that puppy is 40 years old as it was used when I got it. Always had plenty of ammo until this year I went on an elephant cull and shot every damm shell on the belt. Kind of scarry folling up a wounded cow with only one solid left. I did find out that tuophy bonded bearclaw .375"s will shoot into a elephants lungs from the side.

Has anyone ever looked to see if any stripper clips from some of those old rimmed military rounds would fit an H&H based belted case? For an iron sighted big bore mauser action, could ears be cut into the bridge to facilitate a reload via a stripper clip? With the 06 based cases it's a no brainer, but I don't consider my 9.3x62 a big bore (and since it is a CZ550 American, it does not have the ears for a stripper clip). But what about a 375 or 411 Hawk on a Springfield or Mauser action? That's a fast reload of 5 rounds with one reach down to the waist.

Don't the CZ550 Magnums in 375 H&H hold 5 down? If one found a stripper clip that fit the rim, 4, maybe 5 rounds would fit on the clip. Anyone ever investigated this?

Guys,

I know I'm a non-traditionalist and therefore a heretic but I use a buttstock ammo carrier of the Uncle Mike's variety. It may look funky but the extra rounds are always with you and very handy. I feel that trumps Africa cool and a belt that pulls your pants down everytime.

I was looking at CotW today while on the can and I thought about this topic again. According to the case dimensions listed after the British cartridges chapter, the 303 British and the 300 and 375 H&H cases have the same rim diameter of .530 inches. Anyone have a stripper clip for an SMLE laying around to see if the H&H cases fit in it?

Murray's leather or canvas....canvas for the 375 and 404, leather for the 470 and (now) 450. I cut the bottom "flaps" from the leather ones so I can push up with my thumb/fingers if needed. Works great.

I use a Murray leather buttstock shell carrier, either 6 or 9 rounds depending on calibre size and a 15 round Murray belt.

I carry extra ammo in the cruiser.

I always "top off" my ammo supply when I return to the cruiser.
