Speer AGS tungsten solids on game?
Has anyone used the Speer AGS tungsten 500 grain .458" solids on game such as elephant, buffalo, hippo, etc.

I shoot a 458 Win Mag and understand that this bullet is shorter than other 500 grain .458 bullets which allows for more powder in the .458 Win Mag case. Are these bullets really worth the extra $$$?????

Thanks.

Seen them used quite extensively on Ele. Prefered bullet ammongst our professional guide community for those that use .458 Win. Our main gun shop has just got 5000 in so we are ok!

Don't like them in .375 though

Bwana1,
I thought I heard something about them being dropped also but I found them at Speer's website and for sale at Midway (for example):

I can't remember hearing anything bad about them except the price. Gee Tim, it's only money. Think of all the cash you're saving by NOT shooting sporting clays with your friends ANYMORE!

By-the-way: you're still welcome to carry my shells (or Mark's shells if you don't mind Remington's and yelling officials).

Ouch! No mercy from your crew!

I may try to sneak out there and meet up with you guys for a little while. Since I am on kid duty, Jack may be joining me.

I will actually be out at Raahauges the weekend before for a 2 day CCW course (can you believe the Orange County Sheriff approved me for a CCW Eeker). Although I tried, my wife was not too keen on me being gone two weekends in a row for shooting. I also have that 5 day Idaho trip in June. If it wasn't for the two little monkeys, I could have pulled it off no problem.

I may try to stop out there for a little while on one of the days. If you guys are not nice to me, you may find a couple of Remington shells in your pouch and I will feel obligated to report you Razzer

If I shot a 458 Winchester, that short bullet would be my choice as I could get more powder in the case and pick up some needed velocity or less pressure, whichever the case may be....

I think it would behoove you to get as many of them as you can, because they are out of production, or so I have read...

Shumba,

Is Link Raahaughes still about? I use to go there as a kid in the 60's and for $10 I could hunt after 12 noon to find birds the paying hunters missed. What a hoot!

500grains
If you want to use the AGS bullets, better buy a lifetime supply now while they are on closeout special at Midway, as they have been discontinued.

Have used them with great success on buffalo in my 458 Lott. The few recovered showed rifleing marks and nothing else after breaking big bones at relatively high velocity from close ranges.

They are shorter that other solids e.g. when compared to Hornady etc. Makes sense ito powder volume in 458 Win Mag.

Am struggling to find local supply though.

Don't worry about the $$ for a good bullet. Doesn't matter how much you pay for a bullet, it is still the cheapest item on a hunt. Think of the cost if you pay less $$ for a poor bullet and you loose the animal. What does the trophy then cost.

Always hunt weith the best possible bullet.
