Semi Auto in South Africa????

bo-n-aroSemi Auto in South Africa????
Sorry guys, but I am just a lowly bow hunter and was asked if a semi auto rifle was allowed in South Africa.
I have a group going this August.... for a plains game bow hunt....a couple of the ladies may want to shot a rifle. One of the guys has a 300mag with a muzzle break and thought it would be good for them to shoot.
Are they legal??

<Hunter Formerly Known As Texas Hunter>I don't think so. They were illegal when I was there in 2001. I doubt that has changed. My opinion (which you have not asked for
) is that the muzzle break will be very unpopular with your PH and 300 WinMag is more than is necessary if the ladies are after the usual plains game. If eland is in the mix, maybe not.
Just my thoughts.

Muzzle brakes, as mentioned many times before on these forums, are unpopular with PH's and others in the hunting party. Really, they are not needed if a rifle is properly fitted to a person.
I have a .300 WM and I think it kicks more than my .375H&H. For plains game a nice .30-06, it will do the ladies and everyone else just fine!

kududeSince I am headed there and have been dealing with importation quite recently, I recollect that rifles are limited, ie, no semi-autos. You can bring in a semi-auto shotgun; however, you must apply and get preapproval for its importation. That is to say, you must use one of the agents and get your application for importation of a semi-automatic shotgun approved before showing up in RSA. Kudude

Jaco HumanExcept for the problems importing a semi auto, which falls under the firearm legislation, you are also not allowed to hunt with a semi auto, nature conservation legislation.
