Tim HeraldJust booked my first ele hunt!!!
Well, this has been in the works for some time, but I just mailed off my deposit so it is official. I am going to Makuti Zim next year to hunt tuskless and sable with Buzz C.- July 20-29.
Sable quality looks very good there (last year's 4 bulls were 45", 44". 40" and 38"), and I know there are lots of ele. A friend is going along and will hunt buff and pg. It will be his first DG experience as his only other trip was to Namibia with me last year to bowhunt PG with Roger.
We are pretty pumped as would be expected. It will definitely give me something to fixate on and look forward to after my leopard trip with KarlS this July.
Good Hunting,
Tim Herald

MJinesTim, you will have a great time. I am headed back to Makuti in October and will make it a point to leave a tuskless or two for you. Prepare to become addicted.

Tim HeraldThanks guys...I will definitely post reports on both hunts with lots of pix. Good luck to you guys going there as well.
Mike, I have been thinking about Makuti ever since we met on the trip over in 2007- and then your report. It was Buzz's #1 recommendation for good sable on places they hunt, and that is what sold me. Please do leave me just one tuskless

.
We plan to film the trip - so hopefully it will all turn out good. Any of you guys that have been there...what do you think the chances of killing a hyena are? I am willing to bait, etc.

MJinesI killed a hyena in Makuti, but it was purely a target of opportunity. You will have to ask Buzz to tell the story about the hyena it was something else. On my trip we saw two hyena, they were in the same group and it was a chance encounter. Other than that we did not see any, although we did not bait for them either.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

We didn't see any, but we weren't looking either. Saw some tracks and a couple of old baits that had been put out for them. You gotta know that they're there.
Good luck - get fit!

bwanamrm...and I bet it won't be your last! The pursuit of elephant brings a sense of excitement, danger and hard work all rolling up into the pinnacle of the big game hunting experience. And Buzz and Myles are two of the best in Africa at it... you should have a great time and wonderful adventure. Good luck!

Bill CSounds great Tim, I did this hunt (tuskless + sable) in Aug-08 with my oldest son, and had a good hunt w/Buzz. I didn't shoot a sable, saw some but not the one I was looking for. Another dude in camp shot a nice one the day after I left (yes, a Dick Dastardly like maneuver!). I did shoot a great old eland and a nice bushbuck.
I didn't see any hyena, and don't recall hearing any at night either. But once the tuskless is down, they are a fun early morning hunt. Buzz absolutely loves hunting hyena!

gbangerThis tuskless ele hunting sounds exciting. It is worthwhile too to counteract all that ivory hunting in years past. Got to get that gene pool back in line. Do you at least get a tail hair bracelet?

BigFiveJackTH,
Have a great time. I will one day go over and do
some sort of non exportable elephant hunt. If it
has tusks I'll have them copied in "glass" or what
ever they use and that'll be my tangilble reminder
of my experience. If it's tuskless I'm gonna smug-
gle back an ear!

Tim HeraldHA-ha-ha...
I guess I will hunt for a tuskless with long tail hairs and hope for a couple bracelets! Buzz will think me crazy, "Ok Buzz...but before I shoot, did you check out the tail?"
