Hoot MurrayMy wife and I had a most wonderful safari with Pierre in the Selous. It' good to see that Pierre is doing well. With all the turmoil in Tanzania the last couple of years, Pam and I were worried that Pierre would be forced out.

SaeedThe Dutchman! As Ray Atkinson calls him.
Pierre is my friend.
Hunted with twice.
He put up with all Walter’s shenanigans.
And my food preferences!
His wife, Anali, is the perfect host.
Have a video of him carrying Walter on his back, crawling on his hands and knees, because Walter was complaining he couldn’t walk!
Walter couldn’t shoot an impala, because there was a blade of grass on the way!
Pierre went ballistic!
He repaid Walter by guiding him to a log!
And made him shoot it!
I could write a book about their adventures!
Walter shot a warthog, and wounded, than ran out of ammo.
He had three rounds.
The warthog lying on the ground, Walter screaming at the top of his voice.
BULLETS!
BULLETS!
As I got close to him to give him more ammo - he was using my rifle.
He had the rifle by the barrel, trying to kill the warthog by hitting it with the rifle stock!
Hunting with Pierre is pure pleasure!

Pierre van TonderHahhahah yes Saeed Walter was one of a kind .... we laughed most of that safari, i remember him giving me that very strong Pepper extract burning the living daylights out of me and Ray telling me to help for the burn i should eat salt ...which works exactly the other way .... Great memories

lavacaPierre,
Still remember your generosity back in 2008 when I was hunting with Miombo in R8, I believe, and your camp was across the Ruaha and we needed a fuel pump. Also remember the hilarious story about the Russian "translators". Good hunting and be well.

lavacaPierre,
I've been back a number of times, a couple in the North and several in the southwest. Hunting in Ugalla next year, but never got back to the Selous. Always wanted to go back.
08 August 2024, 06:24
lavacaPierre,
The Selous has changed so much recently in so many ways. Shoot me an email with the blocks you have and hunting opportunities after next year. I assume the elephant situation is still pretty dismal, but I love hunting cats and buffalo. Hope to hear from you. Good hunting and safe travels.

AtkinsonA lot of good memories in this thread, Pierre and I go back to the beginning of PVT, the days with Pierre, Walter, and Seeds group would be hard to duplicate, so many good stories. Walter would be sorely missed..

retreeverHave put plenty of time with PVT. Knowing what I know the Selous is the place for Chui no people chasing them and them doing there cat stuff daily. I have harvested two cats with a total of 4.5 hrs. in the blind both shot in daylight. The second cat I had 5 baits hit by 5 different chui's. The Selous has been very good to me. Pierre is a good friend.

Indeed, yet I have heard numerous horror stories of clients having done multiple safaris in different countries other than TZ on a quest for Leopard, come close but never got one until they came to TZ.
Summing up the costs involved in those fruitless "escapades" that Leopard was a very expensive trophy.

No idea why there is so much fuss about shooting leopards!
All one has to do is shoot an impala and a warthog.
Hang then in a tree.
Build a blind a few yards away and sit in it!
Leopard comes to the table.
Shoot it!
Back to camp for KABOOBI KABBOBI!

lavacaSaeed,
Most of the time. I've only had it go bad once, but that was an adventure.

SaeedHere is a funny leopard story.
In Chete, Zimbabwe.
Driving to a leopard blind in the afternoon.
We see those two old buffalo bulls running across our tracks!
Alan is screaming “stop! Look at that bull!”
We stop and jump out.
5 minutes later we have two buffalo bulls down.
Including one with a broken horn.
Despite this, he went 49 inches!
Off the leopard blind.
We sit, and not long after a leopard walks right in front of us.
In broad daylight!
Too young to shoot.!

lavacaLeopards can be super easy or hard if they won't come in daylight. But you really don't want to wound one. It's hard to do because as Saeed said, it's not a long shot. We'd converted a lion bait to a leopard bait after the lion was in the salt, so it was around 100 yards. We sat in the morning and the leopard was lying down on the branch when it got light. I waited for him to stand, which was a mistake. As soon as he stood I shot, but he jumped out of the tree at the same moment. No one got hurt and the leopard was recovered, but a leopard charge is incredibly fast. I'd read about it, but it's impossible to describe accurately.

AtkinsonI hunted and booked hunts for Pierre for a number of years and if he told me the sun wasn't coming up tomorrow Id bring a lantern.
You wont go wrong hunting with him..On my last hunt we got my largest bull and the concessions largest. A lot of fun followed up that kill, but that's another story in itself..

SaeedWe saw a warthog running like hell in the bush.
One could only see bits of him as he whizzed between trees!
I took a chance and fired at him.
He disappeared!
I said I didn’t think I hit him.
A tracker saw him dead.
Pierre was screaming “why is he dead then!?”
I said “he ran into the bullet!”
Hunting with Pierre, and Walter present, it was a laugh a second!

AtkinsonI booked a lot of hunts for the Duchman, his Leopard success always amazed me, and why not Walter and I taught him to hunt!!!
