6.5 in Zim
Looking to book a trip with my son in 2014 and he shoots a .260 rem. Would it be allowed in Zim (do they have a limit on caliber they enforce) and would you guys recommend a TSX 130G or an AFrame in 140G? Thanks

I seem to remember that 7mm was minimum for something like kudu.

And the 270 qualifies, but not the 6.5.

I am sure some of our members have an update on this.

It's only Eland and Giraffe that are subject to a min caliber requirement in Zim (of the plains game species that is). you can find the info here

I happen to like the 6.5x55 and the 260 is similar ... great choice for a youngster for everything from jackal/coyote up to kudu/elk.

My son has taken many of Zim's plains game over 3 safaris with his 6.5 X 55. I loaded 140 gr. A-Frames, which his rifle likes, over RL 22 at about 2700 fps. No eland, but all the small guys as well as zebra, kudu, and wildebeest were taken. That caliber's performance, with a good bullet, and good shot placement, has to witnessed to be believed. I was so enamored with the round, I built one for myself. A great caliber for a youngster or someone not so young.

My experience has been that the min caliber "requirements" to be more "guidelines" than anything. In short, my experience is that nobody on the ground really cares.

Has anyone ever had a ph or game scout say they couldn't use "X" caliber because it did not meet the minimum? I have never heard of it happening. If anything PH's seem to be practical about the situation. As long as it isn't a stunt (Elephant with a .223 for example) they are usually fine with it.

Great feedback, thanks. Had an opinion that I would be better off going with a softer bullet like a Nosler Partition vs an Aframe or TSX. Logic was more expansion. Good idea?

Since the rifle may be used on game from 20lbs for a grisbuck to more than 1,000lbs for an eland, it is better to emphasis the penetration, imo.
