458 LOTT

My ph in Tanzania last year used a 458 Lott as back up. It was a CZ 550.

I accompanied a client using the 458 Lott take a Buffalo with a solid using the tried and true "Texas heart shot".

One morning, I accidentily grabbed the ph's Lott in hast while jumping from the truck pursuing a Warthog.

I got a bit of a surprise when I looked down to chamber a round ... Needless to say, it worked fine on the Warthog.

We got into an interesting situation with a Buffalo with me shooting a 450 Dakota and him a 458 Lott. I had a good first shot with the Dakota, he should have died within seconds, but this guy would not give it up. Took 11 total rounds from both of us to finish the deal.

I consider it a very good round for and dangerous game animal.

Is the 458 LOTT a wildcat, or is it a factory loading? Also could a Ruger model1 in 458 win be rebored to a 458 LOTT?

Terry,

The .458 Lott was a wildcat. Winchester offered it as a Custom Shop proposition and Ruger now chambers it in their M77, so I guess it is now 'standardized'.

A #1 .458 (or .45-70) could be re-chambered to the Lott cartridge.

In addition to the firearms chambered for the Lott, Hornady is producing factory loaded soft points and solids, and brass for reloading.

I inhereted a ruger model 1 in 458 win from my brother. Now you have me thinking.
By the way, I firest heard of the 458 LOTT from my PH. He was planning to have his CZ rechambered from 458 Win to 458 LOTT. It seems that on the hunt prior to mine he was "false charged" by an elephant. At least he thought it was a false charge until it was 10 yds away then it became appearent that it was a real charge. The win stoped the elephant, but as they say, "Ain't nothing wrong with firepower".

ruger also has the #1 in 458 lott. I bought one last weekend. Got brass in the mail today few more things and ill give her a rip.

So you went with the No. 1 instead of the bolt gun Tonto? Be ready for some whiplash from what I've heard, compared to a well designed bolt gun stock. I am curious as to what your impression of it is, please keep us informed.

I have used the Lott a bit, and it will knock them down if you hit them right...It is a good deal better than the standard 458 Win with a 500 gr. Bullet at 2250 to 2350 FPS...

I used the Woodleighs in SN and solids...If I had a Lott today then I would use the GS FN solid for everything...

Really? What about a .45-70's rim?

If you were to rechamber a .45-70, a .45-90, .45-100, .45-110 would be better choices I think. And I see no reason why you couldn't load them to the same levels as you would the Lott in a Ruger #1. And you wouldn't have to mess with the extractor either.

Still think Ill buy a bolt for hunting. The Ruger was good looking and cheap just the way i like them. I think if I can shoot her ok i will be able to handle a big bore. Its put togather real nice. stainless with the laminated stock. Im thinking it might push me around a bit but i should see soon. Ill keep you all posted.

Yes, you'd have to set the barrel back .070", change the extractor, and tinker around with things a bit, but it's only impractical, not impossible.

Personally, I wouldn't waste my time, but there are all sort of people with #1s in .45-70 who are looking for more oomph.

Tonto, There's no rule about not using it on adirondack whitetails and bear,download a cast slug and your all set. I've got a mold for you if you need one, an NEI .458 FNGC single cavity, that and some Accurate 5744 or Blackpowder and your set.

thanks I am setting up a reload bench now. Got a press and some other goodies used. Picked up some brass at a gun show. Going to order the dies next week and the last of what I need.
Then I can get some good loads to start with. You ever load any lotts? I have a box of factory loads coming just to add some color to my shoulder.
I am still looking at a cz550.

I took a pair of buffalo with the Lott, using the Barnes 450 "X" @ 2,450fps. Both were one shot kills on extreme raking shots and gave 4'+ penetration.

TerryR I had my 458win chambered to 458lott last year , didn't cost much. killed a large bison and plan going back to Africa and try it out. I bought the Ruger#1 because it was an easy conversion. NOW ITS OFFERED IN FACTORY 458LOTT I HAD BAD TIMING !

I have only taken one buffalo with a Lott. It was one center,facing me, chest shot and down in about 50 yards. I was using A-Square Dead Tough ammo. It certainly did not knock the buffalo down. But, was just like other calibers I have used. My experience is that the buffalo does not go down immediately on the first shot into the heart - unless the spine or brain is hit accidentally or intentionally - but falls with 50-75 yards. I did feel more confident with the Lott than with a smaller caliber, but that is just mental most likely. My next buffalo hunt will try out a .500 NE.

Shot my Ruger #1 in 458 lott yesterday. It seems to shoot great. I only shot offhand and kneeling so I not sure on how tight it groups. The trigger pulled a little lighter than I like. But I felt recoil wasnt bad. A good recoil pad and it should handle just fine.

I have not done any reloading for years but plan to have a good friend that is into reloading in a big way assist me in getting started again.I'm about to reload a bunch of .458 Lott rounds in soft and solid for a buff hunt in May and when I referred to Barnes latest reloading book it has some info.
Does anyone have another book source or better yet some recipes for this load. We already have a bunch of Barnes solids in 500 grains and am going to order some softs. Was thinking about some Swift A-Frames if I can get them unless someone else has better suggestions?

Also going to load up my .416 Remington as well.

I think Norbert who frequents this site from time to time shot 10 elephant in 2002 with the 458 lott. So far, none of the elephant have recovered.

The load that I like in the 458 Lott, which I plagirized from your competitor Ray, is 84.0 gr. IMR 4320 with a F215 primer and a 500 grain Woodleigh. You might have trouble fitting the Barnes solid on top of that much powder since the Barnes is longer.

Better yet would be to try out some of the Fritz454 flat losed solids. He is in your neighborhood and he can adjust the bullet nose until it feeds well in your rifle.
