6,5 x 57 for Africa?
Hi, I'm thinking of bringing a 6,5 x 57 to Africa, South Africa to be precise. Who has done it already? Please tell us about your experiences with that caliber, also kind of animals hunted and what bullets.

My Grandad had one, an hunted most plains game very comfortably. Just get under 250 yds on most animals an get within 200 yds of kudu Zebra etc then no problems.
Bullet placement is always key

I killed this Zebra with a borrowed 6.5X57 after all my gear and guns were "misplaced" in Zim. One shot, Zebra ran maybe 80 yards and dead.

I'd use a 6.5 x 57 for just about anything I'd use a 7 x 57 for.

That said, I'd probably draw the line just before zebra and wildebeest, but as you can see, it really seems to have done the job. Placement, placement and a good bullet.

That said, I'm probably taking my 260 Rem to SA next year, so much the same thing really.

Somewhere there is an absolutely wonderful article on the various 6.5s in Africa by the late and great Finn Aagaard. I'm a big fan of the 6.5X55.

I would do plains games with a single shot rifle in 6.5 mm before I am too old

Posted this on the European , don't know how many of you folks visit there though

The 6.5 bucks the wind so much better at long range it will make shot placement more precise.
I have sent lots of 308,7 mm and 6.5 mm down to 500 meter rams. I have not found a 6.5 bullet that shoots well. Look at the Barnes TSX for big plains game.

I have not spilled any blood with the 6.5,I know the 160 gr bullets have a good rep on moose and stag.

260 Rem - 6.5 x 51! Eeker Whistling stir

Ain't going to piss me off at all by saying that - and it bears the same relationship to the 6.5x55 as the 7mm-08 bears to the 7x57 .... which is not a bad place to be.

On my last 2 trips to the East Cape I used a 6.5/.284 XP 100 handgun (similar in power to your rifle) to take 12 animals, all one shot. Longest-baboon at 420. Largest-#2 handgun Cape kudu at 200. The absolute #1 bullet is the 130 gr. Nosler Accubond. I've tried every 6.5 bullet I could find and it far exceeds the others in performance and accuracy.

Nah - I've thought it myself. BTW I should have said it bears the same relationship to the 6.5x57 rather than 6.5x55, but I'm old and senile.

I've shot a heap of plains game with my 260Rem using nosler 140gr partitions and accubonds, and my clients have shot a bucket load more on top.

I can't comment about the other calibre you mentioned as I didn't realise that another 6.5mm calibre existed... Wink

The 57 should come close to the 260 I'm sure.

The 130 acubond is my fav as well - only out of a 264 WM.

Stop pretending to hop about, mate. You're old and senile and past your "best before" date as well. Fuck, if I was prone to take things personally, I'd think you weren't a friend ....

Next year I hunt RSA ....
