Very good pictures. You have captured things that most Africans never dream of seeing.

Use Enough GunGreat photos! Especially the action shots of the leopard.
Truly great photos, and what makes AR stand head and shoulders above the rest.
Thank you very much, cjw.

Punsters too.

TheBigGuyWell done!
I like to see someone else that uses the Canon S2 IS. It's a great little point and shoot for the money. It will take some very nice video clips in a pinch too. These clips are better than alot of camcorders. This is a great Sportsman camera just tuck it in a daypack and go.
My brother has the Canon 20D. It's an outstanding SLR. I wish he would let me borrow it

Wow! GREAT photos. Thank you posting these wonderful shots.

thornellGreat Photos!
Thanks for all the comments!
TheBigGuy - quite a number of people take the Canon S2IS on photo safaris and get some great shots.
The 1st 2 leopard shots was of a male leopard in a tree. There was a female higher in the same tree and our guide thought the female probably killed the duiker and the male stole it. Here is another picture made with the S2IS of the whole tree with both leopards.
john e - I do have a photo album on line if you want to see more of them. The rest of the photos from this trip (that I have processed) are here
http://www.pbase.com/cjw/africa_2006&page=allThe photos I took last year in Botswana are at the same website. Just click "All Galleries" and you can see the albums from different trips.
CJW,
Did you use any filters on your SLR lenses? UV, Polarizer?
Erik, the 2 larger lenses do not. The smaller lens does - maybe a UV? I can't remember. When I was in Botswana in October, one of the guys dropped his 70-200 and it broke the glass in his filter. Don't know if his lens would have broken if he didn't have the filter but I sure wouldn't want to find out. The lens hoods on the 2 larger lenses protect that glass.

LorenzoI have watch your page and all I can say is WOWW !! Increadible pictures.
I really like the bird pictures, I am a disaster taking photos but one thing I will really like to learn is taking pictures to birds, I always dream with making a catalogue with pictures like yours with the birds of my country, but when I started asking prices of the equipment necessary for such thing I run away

If you have any more bird pictures please post them.

I am looking for a digital SLR and you have helped me. Any regrets or caveats on your equipment? Thanks in advance for your advice and your shots are stunning.

kudu4u - I love my camera and lenses. I have the 10D and the 20D. I like the 20D the best (much faster). I have been watching for a good used 20D to replace the 10D. If I could only have one lens it would be the 70-200 f/2.8. Then the 300. I got the 500 less than a week before this trip so I haven't used it as much as the other two (bought them in 2003).
In buying used equipment, I go first to Allen's Camera in Pennsylvania (I'm in Texas) because he is honest and deals in used equip. I buy new from him also, and from B&H in NYC. The 500 I bought used from a guy at naturescapes.net (where I participate in their forums).
Good luck!
Also - be careful buying new or used equipment. A guy at another forum just bought $5k in cameras and lenses from Butterfly Photo in NY and it was shipped Fedex. It arrived damaged and the clerk in his office signed for it anyway. Turns out there is a lens missing from the box. He shipped it all back and is having problems with Butterfly. They are charging him a 10% restocking fee and charging him for the missing lens, $2k total. Fedex claims to only deal with the shipper. Be sure to check seller's ratings before buying. If you read the ratings on Butterfly you would never have ordered from them but I guess this guy didn't know to do that.

kududeCJW,
What wonderful photographs. I sent a "copy" of your lilac breasted roller to my brother, who loves the bird. He was enthralleld by it (and every one he ever saw!) I really enjoyed your work. Kudude

MAU MAUExcellent photographs and thank you for sharing. Were the Leopard pictures taken in a hunting area or a photo only area?
MAU MAU - all of these photos were taken at a "photo only" private game reserve outside of Krueger Park.
We did not get close to anything on the hunting property. It was real windy and everything was running away as soon as they saw us/smelled us.
This is the best animal picture I got at the hunting farm. The PH said the female zebra was semi-tame and in a pen. Anytime the workers went into the pen the zebra attacked them so they let her loose. A few days later they saw her and one of the stallions mating so they penned here again. This is the result.

TheBigGuyI took a look at the web link of your photo collection. Some nice work there, for sure!
I wonder if you've tried the S2 IS macro function? For close ups of insects, small animals and flowers I've found, it's quite good.
