Could she actually swallow the whole thing?
You think she ( or maybe its a he ?) would have been able to actually swallow this chicken?

Talk about your eyes being bigger then your stomach! If a 18 foot python was able to swallow a proportional size mammal imagine what he could choke down!

Bakes and Saeed, since the thread is about a snake swallowing a chick, you were almost right!

I once watched a @12'python kill and eat a female bushbuck.

It's definitely a push feed situation.

A general rule for snakes is to feed them something that is the same diameter as the largest (in diameter) part of their body. This is not the law, so something bigger can be eaten, but the chicken seems just a little too big for that snake. The larger the snake the more this seems to occur. Large pythons tend to eat animals around the size or the impala, bushbuck, springbok, etc. which tend to be bigger then the diameter of their belly. Some snakes, like Burmese pythons, can have pretty big bellys though.

I have seen rattlers that looked like they had swallowed small footballs. Snakes (not sure which ones) can unhinge their jaws to swallow animals that are much bigger in size than they are in diameter. I would bet that giventhe few hours it takes for a snake to complete the process it would have gotten the whole chicken down.

OKAY, THAT'S IT! TOO MANY SNAKE THREADS IN RECENT WEEKS! ("STOP IT, STOP IT, IT'S A SILLY SKETCH, STOP IT!")

FROM NOW ON, YOU GUYS NEED TO PUT DISCLAIMERS IN YOUR TITLES, LIKE "RUSS, DON'T READ THIS THREAD, IT'S ABOUT SNAKES!"... OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT!!!

And yes, I was yelling. If there was a "stomp-my-feet, jump-up-and-down" icon on here, I'd have used it, too!

Initially, I thought the same thing. (Not that I know who she is, or anything.)

This one sure has a nicely marked skin, glad I saw him in the road and not under foot! These Puff adders are slow to move out of the way but rather quick to strike at you if you step on them!
Such a small snake and such a big problem to get bit by one. They have a horrible bite even when they are very small!

The real question is not "could she" but "will she?"?

Don't Look Russ !

Here is one that I saw on my first trip and yes she was still alive when I left

We guess she was about 15 feet long and got an Impala or a Diker that morning as we saw the strike area. The coolist thing I have seen no question ask!
