juanpozziI use a lot a 4570 marlin guide gun in our huge water buffalos with garrets ,thanks to billinthewild and have great results with them ,so it must be interesting to use in elephants,Danie vaan graan a close friend of Bill killed severalcape buffalos with the COPILOT 4570 .Please dont kill me for defending the 4570.Juan
Juan, I'll not beat up on you for defending the 45-70 as it is a great caliber!
My 458 WM shoots a 450gr .458 TSX @ 2200 fps, and my 45-70 shoots a 450 gr .458 TSX @ 2100fps..both are right around 1" @ 100 yds..I can't for the life of me see where that 100fps makes a hill of beans to any buffalo be he cape, water or bison!

BwannaI have a 45-70 that I shot a huge bison in Colorado (on the run) last year. However, it does not even closely compare with the power of the .458 Lott that I take to Africa for dangerous game. I would not substitute on a bet. If you're going to use the 45-70 for something that might turn the tables on you, make damn sure you've got a great PH with a shoulder cannon to back you up!

yukon deltaI was the guy with the 50 levergun. I missed the brain just slightly forward (shot through the gland) on a quartering to shot and the ele still dropped instantly and could not regain her feet. The PH just knew she was brain shot from her reaction...back legs collapsed, head thrown back and trunk way up in the air. I might have a video clip of it online later.
It worked great for me and the PH fell in love with it. In fact, he insisted I use it instead of the Lott I had with me. I would do it all over again.

GonHuntinI'd say exit wounds on the elephant tell the story!
