Want to hunt the real Africa

HowardWant to hunt the real Africa
I have hunted RSA twice now both times had a great time hunting with friends and family. I want to head back in a few years and want to start planning. I want something different this time. While our RSA hunts where great I want something more then a ranch hunt, what area/country should I look at considering today’s political climate game numbers etc? Also some rough ideas of expected costs would be good too.
I will be at SCI next week so if you could steer me towards some outfitters too that would be good.

WinkAt the high end (price wise) you have Lord Derby Eland in the Central African Republic. One of the most impressive trophies in the world, the biggest of the spiral horned antelope and definitely a hunt that most have not and will never do. Of the people that post on this forum I know that JBDERUNZ has taken one (and he went back this year and is there now looking for a Bongo). I don't believe too many others have been. I lived in the CAR for three years and I don't think there is a single fenced property in the whole country, no matter how small the plot. You will not see fences, that is guaranteed! Here is a link to Jean Bernard's hunting report:

BwanamichAs far as Tanzania is concerned there are hundreds of "real africa" hunts on offer. your budget is your limit!
Compare prices amongst outfitters and what they include and don't include. Search AR and other forums for past reports on areas/outfitters/ph's. On the surface a hunt priced at $50K
might appear the same as another priced at $30K. Usually if there is a $20K difference in price there is a reason.
If you need any advice feel free to contact me via PM.
Happy hunting!

GAHUNTERHoward,
While in Reno, stop by Jumbo Safaris booth and talk to Jumbo Moore. He has a brand new 1,000,000 acre concession in Mozambique, plus a concession in Zimbabwe in the Save Conservancy.
I hunted with Jumbo and he runs a first class operation at one of the most reasonable prices for DG hunts anywhere in Africa.

butchlocif you want to talk to jumbo PM me after reno he'll be staying by us for a week or so. & i'll have him get ahold of you

GAHUNTERButch,
You scheduled your Mozambique hunt with Jumbo yet?

Rich ElliottHoward,
I don't know exactly what species you are interested in but we have a good cross section of East African Plains game on a 15 day safari in the Omo Valley. There isn't a fence for 500 miles os so and the women stil wear skins. Come vist at Booth #952-954

Lesser Kudu
S. Gerenuk
N. Grants Gazelle
Tiang
Guenther's dik-dik
Black Backed Jackal
Golden Jackal
Spotted Hyena
Also a few of the smaller critters when available

DesertRamIf you're just after some more plains game, but in a "wilder" setting, try Namibia. My dad and I hunted with Vaughan Fulton's Classic Safaris and had a wonderful time in his tented camp. No real roads, no power lines, no fences, nothing but 440,000 acres (now about a million - he's added more land) of relatively untouched tribal conservancy at your disposal. The costs were very reasonable, and the hunt was exceptional.

I'm curious about your Ethiopian hunts. Are you hunting out of permanent camps w/ generators etc or tent camps that are moved around?
Do you use Fly Camps?
When hunting do you take the entire camp with you as seen in most of the TZ and Zim hunts or is it limited to just the PH, tracker and hunter?
As far as animals, do you have to pre-buy licenses or can you shoot what you like at he time?
Are your hunts geared more towards 'collectors' or hunters.

smokepole paulAt SCI go by and talk to John Abraham. He and his wife Lauri own and operate Madubula Safaris.
http://www.madubula.comAsk him about the Venetia area. They are good people and come highly recommended.
They will also be at the Dallas and Houston Safari Club conventions.

HowardMy budget for the actual hunt, defined as costs incurred upon arrival in country, is going to be in the 20,000 range. This may not be enough money I know.
I have heard good things about Mozambique but would need lots more information. Given the state of affairs in Zimbabwe not sure I want to hunt there.
Tanzania is out of my price range from what I know about costs there.
Rich I would love to hunt Ethiopia with you but think again it is out of my price range.
Maybe my first question should be, Is 20,000 enough to experience the real wild Africa on a hunt?
I will visit the people suggested.
Rich, Chic and I are driving down but he is too cheap to buy a ticket to SCI. Says he is going to go hang out at the Guild show instead. Call the cheapskate up and give him an earfull would you?

bulldog56320,000 should be enough to do a 10 day TZ Buff and plains game. Also could go to Moz, Zim, Zambia or Namibia.

Both. We hunt a bunch of places. The Omo is a permanent camp with 8 bugalows. Sometimes our Photo tour division uses it as well.
Do you use Fly Camps?
We do in the Mt. Nyala areas. But only if we need too to find a good mt nyala or somewtimes a Giant Forest Hog.When hunting do you take the entire camp with you as seen in most of the TZ and Zim hunts or is it limited to just the PH, tracker and hunter?
PH, Client, local tracker, and 2 governmnet game scouts...one Federal and one Provincial. As far as animals, do you have to pre-buy licenses or can you shoot what you like at he time?
You'll buy the licneses about a month before the safari and they are non refundable..just like in the States. It takes some planning. Are your hunts geared more towards 'collectors' or hunters.
That's a good question. I think a little of both. We have guys who are really species nuts and we have guys who just like to hunt. Guess that's a good thing since it keeps us busy.[/QUOTE]

Well, shucks!
I'm going anyway. Been wanting to do that for years but usually I have to get back home. Would be this time but good old Delta cancelled our flight and it was too late to book another on Sunday.

You may want to check out a hunt in Botswana's Okavango delta. Mark Kyriacou's Big game and Bird Safaris and Johann Calitz both offer hunts in the Delta. I've hunted with Mark, PH was Glen Munger, and Calitz has a very good reputation. The scenery is spectacular, the camps are traditional tented camps, there are no fences and the game plentiful. I've been there 3 times and loved it each time.

GAHUNTERHoward,
I did a buffalo/leopard/plains game hunt with Jumbo for about 18 grand (not counting air, tips and dip and pack). That included trophy fees on all animals on my list.
This, however, was in Zimbabwe (Save Conservancy). His Mozambique fees are close to the same as his Zim fees, however, there are extra government and air charter costs, to the tune of about $3-4 thousand.
14 January 2006, 02:55
DonatoHoward, I did a buff 7/day buff hunt in Zambia for way less than 20 grand. Had crocks and hippo right outside my door and had a lion walked 20 yards from my chalet in the night. I heard lions roar most nights I was there.
14 January 2006, 03:21
JoeRHoward, you should also consider the Chewore region of Zim, a park the size of Yellowstone with lots of good animals and reasonable prices. You'd be largely unaffected by the political situation in Chewore as ther are no people.

What Donato said! Go to
http://www.weshixon.com He books for Peter Chipman, who hunts the Lower Lupande concession in the Luangwa Valley of Zambia. I've also hunted this area, and it is top notch. You can do a Bufflo and plains game easily for under $20K. Go 14 days, and you might add a leopard and still stay within your $20K as well. Peter Chipman is a good guy, and is a top notch PH!

bull1If I knew I only had time to do one more hunt before I died, I would make it in the Selous Game Reserve. It's the real deal. And for the amount you are talking about spending, you can get a really great 2 buffalo safari as well as plains game. No fences and no people!
Where ever you decide to go, good luck to you. Just enjoy yourself.
