Any disadvantage of using a Remington action to build a rifle for African PG? I plan on a 26" barrel in 7RM and a Harry Lawson Cochise stock.

The Remington factory extractor on the magnum head size action is fond of peeling little pieces of brass off the cartridge case, which seem to love to get behind the extractor or bind the ejector.

How about a nice push feed M70?

There are no end of after-market parts for the M700s though.

It should be fine if it's built correctly. I'm not sure about the thumbhole stock, though. The ones I tried were slow to bring to bear.

The extractor on my Remington Custom Shop ABG in .375 H&H lasted five days in Zimbabwe.

I have been selling model 700's for 25 years. The number of extractors that have failed is probably around 1-2%. If you're worried, simply have a Sako extractor installed and your worries are over.

Why not buy a used M-70Win, a CZ-550 or ZKK-602 to use to build your rifle?

I think the M-700 is a great rifle for small to medium calibers but not necessarily for DGR calibers.

Who does that work...and I should add...does it well enough to bet your life on...??? Not trying to stir the pot...but rather seriously looking for a good Remington mechanic.

I have used a Remington Safari 375 H&H on my first African hunt. I shot a number of animals with it. Including an elephant and two buffalo.

It was a factoy rifle, bought second hand, and never modified. I had no problems with it whatsoever.

I have also had a custom rifle built on a Remington 700 action - 270 Ackley. This one had a SAKO extractor installed in place of the factory one.

Several of us used this rifle on number of African hunts, and, again, we have never had any problems.
