Was reading Ian Nyschen's "Months of the sun" where he mentioned meeting a Nyasaland (Malawi) civil servant (if I read it correctly) who crossed Lake Nyasa (Malawi) to help out the villages in Northern Mozambique that were being plagued by man-eating lions. Can't remember the name the man was given, but it meant "He who shoots two animals with one bullet", or something.

Anyway HWSTAWOB's favorite lion followup rifle was a drilling with 2 9.3 barrels (probably 9.3 x 74R) and a 12G shotgun barrel. Ian seemed to think highly of it as well.

The normal use of "Drilling" is to describe what we will call a SxS shotgun with a rifled barrel below. But a bit of further reading will show a wide variety of rifle barrels mixed with shotgun barrels, all called "drillings".

The best "use" of a 12 gauge shoptgun in a wounded lion follow up will probably be to, in a situation where only an unknown part of the lion is seen, fire at it and so just provoke a charge during which the 9.3X74 barrels can be used.

A 9,3 double over a last ditch 12g barrel loaded with a slug? Not a bad idea

Although the typical Dreilling is double Shot over rifled barrel, I think the double 9.3x74 over single 12g would be just great. Even better would be a three barrel Mathalon 9.3.

However If I get another chance at another Lion I will make sure I have this at hand;

In a dangerous situation like this, one would want to have a rifle he is very familiar with.

I would use my usual rifle.

There is no way in hell I am going to go after a wounded lion with another gun.

So a well used Single triggered H&H Royal double in 375F would not be preferable?

The Mathalon comes with 3 barrels, two via one trigger and the third off the second trigger.

P.S. No offence mate - while the Mathalon may work for some - to me (I guess I am chalenged some) sounds and feels like a Math Problem, right from the beginning

One more shot than a double without loss of Accuracy, weight and Handiness can't be all that a bad thing and even if you fumble for the second trigger-third barrel your still one better than an empty double.

That would be my thought as well! The one exception would be a three barreled rifle, with the ntriggers set up with the front trigger for the right barrel, the bact trigger for the left barrel, pulled again to fire the bottom barrel, and being a mechanical re-set trigger!

All the tree barreled rifles I've seen have a single trigger for the two top barrels, with the bact trigger firing only the bottom barrel.I don't want any trigger enertia set on any double, or three barreled rifle.

I'm with Saeed n this one. I'd rather stop a lion with a 30-06 that i'd used for years and years than anything I bought special for lion no matter how well suited it seemed on paper.

I would think one of the 12-bore Paradox guns might be useful here. And I almost hate to mention it, but none other than Boddington once suggested a Marlin .45-70 lever gun with good loads as a walk-up lion gun ...
