The .404 Jeffery29 November 2004, 12:38
WillWhat am I missing here? There is all this stuff about getting 2600 fps out of a 404, the supposed magical caliber of yesteryear, that was factory loaded to 2150 fps. So is a 404 going 2600 fps a 404 or something else?

NickuduI suppose most all cartridges of that era are "something else" with today's components, eh? With the Jeffery, I'd give it just a touch more velocity and leave well enough alone. A fine cartridge which makes for a sweet set up on a standard Mauser action.

WillWell, if you can fit a 404 in a "standard" length action, then one could do the same for the .416 Rem. Mag. Nostalgia, maybe, but of any practical gain over any other 416 round, not that I can see. My first go around with the 416 Taylor gave 2350 fps, and a lot cheaper to shoot.
