The answer is simply that in a country like RSA, we are not really a coffee addicted nation. Except some of us...like me!

As a result we drink mostly instant...which I agree is generally junk. There is some better stuff like the Jacobs brand from Europe.

BUT...good stuff is freely available. In fact after spending 7 years working seasonally in Canada (a coffee nation) I find that most of the stuff is not great either. Starbucks is OK but certainly not what I would call great at all! Second Cup make a good brew.

In RSA, if we drink proper drip brew it is generally very good and usually European style roast and grind..so very rich and strong...and great. Lots of it comes from Italy or Germany and is freely available.

The problem is that your outfitters are no-doubt not coffee addicts and grew up with nescafe or Ricofee instant (the latter is OK when made very strong!).

When you are next there try some of the Ciro or Lavazza grind brands.
There are many good coffee shops in the major centers like Mugg and Bean, Coffee at Burgandy's etc etc.....hope this helps.

We do grow coffee in SA but on a small scale. In fact, some of the best I have ever had on 4 continents is called Sabie Valley Coffee grown between Sabi and Hazyview...Good stuff also come from Assegai Coffee near Shongweni in KZN.

Try it!
