steeldo people in africa hunt watusi?
I know hunting preserves offer watusi hunting. I was just wondering if people in africa acually hunt them or are they just demesticated? Are their any watusi in the wild in africa? And what do you guys think about them as hunting game? They look a little more docile than a cape/water buffalo and bison.

crbutlerI was told in Tanzania that Cape Buffalo will kill domestic cattle, including the long horned variety, and that the domestic stock have absolutely no chance against them, and this was part of the reason that the herd boys are out there all the time. I did see the herds getting moved in a hurry by the masai when a buff herd showed up. From that, I doubt there is any wild population of Watusi cattle available except on private land that has no buffalo.

jdollarWatusi are simply domesticated livestock. for the life of me i can't see a reason to shoot a cow. might as well go to the nearest ranch and shoot an Angus or Herford.

And every cowboy working on that ranch, when out of hearing of the Yankee city folks, are laughing their collective asses off about the guests shooting livestock and paying high prices for the right to do so!

to answer the origenal question, NO Africans have more sense than to kill their domestic cattle, and simply milk them to make cheese, to mix the milk with blood to drink. Blood let from the cattle's neck without killing them!

jwmWow...that's quite the operation.
I wonder if you could combine the Watusi hunt with the Trophy African Porcupine hunt? "The Grand Slam of Stupidity"!

376 steyrI suspect these hunted Watusi are desendents of Watusi cattle that some registered cattle breeders got involved in but the market was just not there for the average commercial cattleman to support so they were probably sold to game ranches for hunting.

Big Wonderful WyomingWhat sucks about things like highlanders, watusi, yak and water buffalo is they get marked very low by the packers. So the incentive to raise them as beef cattle is greatly diminished.

BwannaI think one in the trophy room would be a great conversation piece though. There's a guy living near me here in Vegas who has one on his wall and it's pretty interesting. Maybe get a big Caddy and strap a set of the horns to the hood.

jdollari am not sure my heart could take the excitement of shooting a domestic cow- oh, that's right- i shot one with my .45ACP AT 2 YARDS IN MY FEED PEN WHEN THE PROCESSOR SHOWED UP TO BUTCHER IT...i find it hard to believe ANYONE would be stupid enough to pay for a hunting trip to shoot a cow. even a Yankee

I know some of our fellow Westerner's that have killed "wild domestic hogs" in Utah on a "game ranch" just a big domestic hampshire.
I have also seen city slickers from the West, South and North that have paid to shoot really stupid things on a regular basis.
No one is immune from city slicker stupidity.
Marc Watts buffalypso, at the YO Ranch ring a bell? Same dairy breed of water buffalo responsible for mozzarella cheese.

People in Africa DO the Watusi -- old dance. Or they ARE Watusi -- Rwanda. Or they FIGHT for Tarzan...
