Bill C06 Discounted & Interesting Hunts - CM Safaris
Buzz asked if I thought any of these hunts for 2006 would be of interest to AR members, and I said there was only one way to find out! Buzz is in Harare now and available by phone or email, but will be leaving for the bush on/around the 7th of June. Contact Buzz (or his partner Myles) with any questions.

This is a new area that has not been hunted, along the north bank of Caborra Bassa with 30km of lake frontage. There are no roads so we would hunt by boat with day walks into the area. Client can expect HUGE croc and hippo, but lion, leopard and plainsgame quantities unknown. Accommodations will be VERY basic and consist of a tented fly camp along the Seege River. If after walking the area it is found that there is absolutely nothing else there besides croc and hippo we can go to Kwekwe and shoot p/g and if they stay 5 days or more they can shoot sable, and if longer than 10 days try for leopard too.

jstevensThe second one for leopard and sable sounds like a good deal as well. I'd sure like to do this one but I hear my son's college calling this year. He'd probably rather go back to Africa however.

PWN375Hunt 3 may be an adventure, but it certainly is not a bargain. Never be the first or last guy in an area.
Not a slam of Buzz and his company. If they can snag a sucker good for them. However, this "hunt" is a typical attempt by an outfitter to locate a body to take part in an "adventure" and foot the bill for the exploration. These hunts should, at the most, be priced for trophy fees on game shot and a shared cost basis. A guy sure ain't going to consume food and fuel worth $400.00 US per day and accomodations and amenities, I'll wager, are going to define basic.
You will walk your feet flat during very hot, humid, tsetes fly infested days while the PH explores the area for economic feasability. At the end of an invigorating day you will get to sleep warm and muggy at night after consuming sadaz and stew if it doesn't rain or the local variety of MREs when it does, and it will, rain.
It was hot enough in that area during July and it should be a stream room come Nov., if you notice the weather between fly attacks and reapplying your Avon Skin So Soft every 30 minutes. A hunter will waiver between no clothing because of the weather and tin cloth garments to ward of the flies regardless of the heat. I bet you don't get daily laundry and ice for your drinks. A warm Coke will be a frigging luxury.
There is nothing wrong with having a bit of a Selous experience in life, but I certainly am not willing to pay 400 per day for the priviledge even though I love to hunt Africa and don't mind roughing it a bit. There is tough and then there is stupid. To take this hunt will take toughness...to pay for this hunt would take stupidity.

Bill CPerry, you forgot the high probability of contracting one or more exotic illnesses.

Actually...I considered this trip pretty hard but have something else in mind. I asked the same question reg cost, so I respect and understand your perspective. But consider that the PH available (Alan, Buzz/Myles have other commitments) must be paid which is half the per day cost, plus a fee to the owner of the concession who wants his cut (rightfully so or not), plus fuel/food/trackers/staff/salt. Added up, plus the pre- and post-logistics of setting up camp, getting a boat there and back, handling trophies, etc - and I doubt Buzz will be making anything and very likely the contrary. Having been to Africa multiple times including many of the marquee areas, the thought of going into a "new" area is appealing (it has never been commercially hunted before), and there would be a croc and hippo at the very least, plus tiger fishing of course. And buffalo, lion, leopard, etc will be on license.
It all depends what one is into and is looking for, and obviously this would not appeal to the vast majority (99%?) of recreational/sport hunters. Nor should somebody in anything less then excellent physical shape attempt such a trip. But maybe this will float somebody's boat, at the very least it is something DIFFERENT for us to consider. And, Buzz was very clear and upfront that there should be no grandiose expectations, based on his experience on the south bank.
Regards,
Bill

MAU MAUI think the variety of offerings ranging from true Luxury Camps to rustic and exotic Camps is what makes Charlton-McCallum Safaris a premier outfitter. Like any quality company, you must always be looking for new and interesting products for your valued customers, or risk the chance that they might look elsewhere. Personally, I see this Mozambique offering as a possibility at a true Adventure, and do not mind at all at being the first to see this new unexplored area. Areas like these are where true memories are made.
