ON THE GROUND IN ZIM......was hunting Elephant!
Well.....what a stuff up. I am on the ground in Zim with good friend Nigel Theisen. HUNTING ELEPHANT, NO LESS, and reconing new areas. Day before yesterday we were serious considering smoking a Big Hwange bull.....and THANKS BE TO GOD IN HEAVEN WE PASSED. Had the opportunity at other bulls also.
We got back in just to rest up, take a break and go back out after it......and all of a sudden WHAM............The announcement from U.S. Fish & Wildlife. How would you like to be here ready to do business.....OR COULD HAVE JUST SHOT A BULL, and have this happen. Well, we are out of business! Guess we will just mess around the next few days and honestly try to MAKE A PLAN.
I DO NOT KNOW IF I SHOULD CRY - OR COUNT MY LUCKY STARS! Following this with another bit of news about Mark Ellement. See the next thread.

Sorry for your bad luck and timing. This really sucks for you. Good luck

If there was a bull I really wanted, I would shoot it and hope for the best. Course I am still waiting for my Polar Bear from 08 so maybe I am not the best source.

Wow, Brennan, I didn't realize you'd left yet. That timing is truly awful. Do the best you can to have a good time while you're there.

Well, you can still hunt them, just can't bring them back
I'm in same dilemma in October
Still weighing my options, but already leaning to go anyway
May not be long and they might stop it all together

Exactly, what's the problem ? Hunting is still hunting.
Even if you had fiberglass copies made of the tusks the experience is still the same.

My first reaction is to think "there must be an elephant out here that needs to be CULLED…"

And apply my trophy fees that way.

Technically, Barry and his appointees are Socialists, not Commies. Commies have more detailed plans and pay dues to the party. Socialists like Barry just wing it without plans, and are too cheap to pay dues.

I don't want this to be seen the wrong way by some, please this is not a racist remark.
But, our government really is acting like all those African countries, including running national debt to the moon besides all of this.
Downright scary, if you ask me.

You are 1000% correct my friend.

And I am afraid that as we go through these next 2 2/3's years...we ain't seen nothin yet. As he gets passed the fall elections where he has nothing to loose...he and pal Eric combined with greenies like Ms. Jewel...plan to wreak holy havoc on us.

If any of you want to know the definition of UNEASY you should be in Bulawayo about now. Seems all the legitimate operators could see this coming. To a person they are upset and working their tails off to begin the process of somehow trying to land on their feet. They are apoligizing to me for what our F & W service has done to force a clean up their Parks & Wildlife's Mess. Ever heard of Ghost Hunting? Ever heard of Shooting animals inside the Hwange and still continually getting the Ivory out?? U.S. F & W IS NOT ON OUR SIDE - period! But, this is a frickin' huge problem. I just happen to get hit in the face with the shit.......being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Stopped the Ele hunt.....Thankful I had not pulled the trigger. Thankful I passed on bubble bulls. Thankful I did not have to pay a trophy fee. If you do not like that.....screw you! I HAPPEN TO WANT TO BRING THE IVORY HOME!

I totally understand your wanting to bring the ivory home. And like it or not, this puts elephant hunting in Zim in a whole new financial stratosphere for me and many other Americans. You pay one set of fees for importable elephant and something completely different for non-importable.

We seldom get to choose

You can still hunt - HUNT! Take good pictures and have the PH store the ivory until further notice. Things may change.

This may be a dumb question but since you are able to legally hunt elephant but not return the tusks to the US can the tusks be offered for sale while you are there. Something will be done with the tusks if an elephant is shot. Is storage the only option? If they could be commercially sold, donating the proceeds to an anti-poaching group would seem more practical than burying them in storage.

I would hunt also, maybe for a smaller elephant for a litte less. As fantastic as ivory is the experience is even better. Of course I am sorry for this action by your government. The elephants cannot be saved without safari hunting, this is crystalclear.

Sorry no ways you can sell ivory legally this days. CITES quota and permits are exclusive for own use not for any form of commercial use, maybe you cold donate the tusk to a museum.

check the CITES website for regulations.

Cheers

Brennen:

Hammer a bull and have replicas made.

My first elephant was killed in the mid 90's. I won't go through the details but there were issues not of my making. Almost 20 years later, I know exactly where the tusks are but there isn't a chance in hell that I will try and get them shipped. I had a place in Bulawayo make replicas. They look fantastic. Probably the best looking "tusks" that I have. You can even read the CITES numbers.

Sorry brother. I remember how excited you were when we discussed this in Vegas.

The hunt is still the hunt, to hunt is what we are. Fiber glass copies just make all the permits unnecessary and so long to another nuisance factor. Even the fiber glass trophies are remarkable, never deteriorate and truly look amazing. Go, and enjoy the HUNT, I know a lot of you guys don't like
SCI but their legal team will be on this, hopefully with good results. The Zim boys must be devastated.

Can one get tusk replicas made in the USA? - this would save shipping copies from Africa.

I for one will not quite elephant hunting. Sucks not to be able to bring ivory back. Guys on the ground now or scheduled to go soon will more than likely see teh biggest bull of their lives.
Alot of this is due to Zim govt not having their ducks in a row. Wasmuch the same with marco polo from Kyrgizia several years back. Once that govt got it's house in order, we were back at it. Maybe same can happen here. If i am on the ground i would go ahead and. Hunt. To each his own though

I agree, but I'm not there. Today it's not being able to take the ivory home, tomorrow it may be no hunting period. I'd do it while I have the ability at the moment. I live for the moment but that's just me.

Sorry to hear that Brennan.

Its easy to say shoot when your not there and have a +20-30K tag in your hand. Why are so few Americans hunting Moz with a greater chance at a big bull but no chance taking it home? If its all about the hunt.

Brennan can go back and hunt 5 PAC for the price of one trophy bull in one of the better areas.

Real bummer! Shoot a tuskless or two. If you shoot a bull they get your trophy fee plus the ivory.
