AndyAmmo Box Labels
I tried searching for previous topics re. printing ammo box labels for reloaded ammo and did not find any links. I know htis has been much discussed in the past. Can anyone tell me the search words to find the past discussions on printing ammo labels???
I am getting ready for Nov 1 elephant hunt in Dande North w Buzz Charlton safaris.
Thought I wold call my ammo company "Big Five" Ammunition, and have a picture of an elephant for the solids and a buff for the North Fork soft points.

ErikDAndy,
When I went to Zim recently (to hunt with Myles, Buzz's partner), I used MTM plastic 20 round cases which I "sealed" with printed label stickers so that they look more "factory made". I had scanned in a drawing of a buffalo skull, and then made the label in Photoshop with calibur, bullet weight and some other text. It looked quite genuine, and no questions were asked by any authorities.
Some might say that printing labels isn't needed, but after thinking it over, I decided; why take any chances with the airlines, customs etc...

AndyThanks guys,
I imported a picture of an elephant and a buffalo onto two separate labels. One for my solids (elephant) and one for my softs buffalo). I used Avery 5164 labels which matched dimensions of my 450 Dakota ammo boxes. It looks great! And it printed out from MS Publisher perfect the first time. Wow!
I will have to find another long skinny label for the top of the box but it looks pro. My ammo company is "Big FiveAmmunition Company, Bend, Oregon." Look out Nosler!

I use Avery labels for just about everything. They also have stand alone software that is very easy to use. It can be downloaded for free at

GadgeIt wouldn't hurt to have the UN Dangerous Goods info [UN Number, and Hazard Class diamond] on them as well. Quote from an old post of mine:
A very good idea is to include DG info on your label: I'd suggest the at least the UN Number [0012, for our sort of ammo] and Hazard Classification [1.4S].
Reference:
UN InfoThe appropriate Hazard Diamond symbol [like No. 2249 or 2250 on
this page] wouldn't hurt either. Doesn't have to be very large. NB: these symbols are small downloadable gif images - should be easy enough to paste in.

lawndartTwo years ago someone posted a nice illustration of a trumpeting elephant. I was hoping to "borrow" that image for my labels.
Otherwise I'll have to kiss ass on my sister the artist and talk her into painting one up.

Hey Andy,
I'll trade you some good brass for the opportunity to license your design for lawndart projectiles, ltd., the Idaho manufacturing concern......

WillAndy,
You don't need any such things. You're just wasting your time.

AtkinsonWill is right, no need for all that....I use the stick on office note pads and write out my my load data on them in long hand or print it, and cover with clear tape.. on my old ammo taped up ammo boxes. The same thing I do to go to the local range or deer hunting..
The only thing they might do is look at the case head and be sure the caliber matches your gun, if it does not then the may make you chamber one, I saw that once, pretty exciting in a crowded airport, but hey thats Tanzania! Zimbabwe and RSA....
The rest is internet squabble, just take 11 pounds of ammo in factory or factory like boxes with partitions between each round and put them in your check in luggage, not with your guns, and you will never have a problem....

OldsargeReally! I invented the SoCal Ammo Works mostly as a joke and partly for the ego of it all. No one has ever cared except for one guy at the range my partner was shooting at. He wanted to know where to buy the brand!

GeronomoRay is right. I usually just use the above mentioned 20 round slip cases and tape them closed with your garden variety duct tape. The only times I have seen any evidence that the cases were even opened was when using cases which were opaque and the contents could not be visually verified.
