Who makes the Weatherby brand ammo?

Never had any problems with Weatherby ammo.

Had lots of problems with Weatherby rifles made in Japan - I think.

They would fire sometimes when you close the bolt.

Happened on 2 Mark V 300 Weatherby Magnums.

That likely had they're triggers played with at some point in their careers.

They were brand new when we got them.

And both had the same problem.

I made my longest shot with one of them, which turned into quite an exciting episode for one you boy.

I was with my younger brother, and one of his school friends.

We were in our creek - it is several miles from the sea, and many different sea birds.

We used to go there almost every day shooting birds with shotgun.

On this particular day we were right at the end, and the tide was low.

On the far side was an enormous flock of flamingos - they are very good to eat!

I have no idea how far they were, definitely miles away.

We had a discussion, culminating in a bet.

My brothers friend and me had a bet that if I shoot one there, he would gladly walk all the way on horrible, sticky mud, and get it.

If I missed I was to pay him something - I cannot remember how much.

Behind the flamingos in the distance was the high buildings of the city.

I loaded the 300 Weatherby, aimed in the middle of the flock, and slowly raised the rifle up.

The flamingos disappeared at the bottom of the scope, and I continued raising the rifle, until the high rise buildings were right at the bottom of the scope, and fired.

I put the rifle down and we continued watching.

We could see the flamingos taking off.

Then we could see one flapping its wings and not able to fly!

The poor kid had to go get that flamingo.

It took him all afternoon, and when he got back he almost as dead as the flamingo!

ALL of the Norma ammunition I have used seems to be of high quality and VERY accurate in my rifles. I do not own any Weatherby rifles or calibers.

Probably German made ones

I bought 100 rounds of new Norma brass for my 7mm Remington Magnum. I put it through every test I could think of: case weight runout & length, neck thickness and runout, flash holes, primer pockets, and a couple others I can't remember. The entire lot was near-perfect. Awesome stuff!

loaded and brass are coming from Sweden.

never an issue in my 340 wea mark V made in Japan.

A guy I know had a 340 Wby. He pulled the bullets from some factory ammo and weighed the powder. The variation was scary, I don't remember exactly what it was, but some grains. On that day he became a reloader.

Thanks for the great story. I guess what I'm wondering is; did anyone ever check the sear engagement on the rifles?

Regarding Weatherby branded Norma ammo, I've found it very consistent.

I bought a well used but serviceable Mark V in 270 Weatherby for $800. Still haven't fell in love with it but it shoots lights out if you give that thin 26" barrel time to cool between shots. Talk about a flat shooting hard hitting round, maybe I will get to like it

That has been a known flaw of all Mark 5's. Read John Northcote's book done in the late 80's or early 90's....
The problem is- if you load a round, close the bolt and put on the safety....carry it around on the butt in the hunting car...or even in a scabbard on horseback and jostle it around...flip off the safety- BANG!!

This is a sear problem that can easily be fixed by a knowledgeable gunsmith.

This happens with both German and Japan Mark V's. I don't know if this is a problem with the new Maine built rifles...and now Wyoming if they are out yet??

I sold all of my Mark V's and now shoot custom pre-64 Model 70's chambered for the GREAT Weatherby calibers... 257 and 300. My goal was one in every caliber...I woke up before that!!

Being more specific, it is the Weatherby Brand ammo loaded by Norma. There are many ammo makers who load various Weatherby calibers: Remington, Federal, PMC and others....
