I am wondering if it is possible for a non-hunter to take ammo with them. Headed to Botswana via RSA and I will be taking two rifles and ammo. Can my non-hunter friend take ammo as well where he won't have any rifles? He might end up doing some hunting if given the chance and 375 ammo just weighs a lot per round.

It is my understanding that you can only carry ammo for the rifles that are in your posession & if no rifles, then no ammo is allowed.
Was looking to take my PH some 416 lott ammo to Zim last year, but found out that this was not allowed & did not want to end up in jail in either S.A. or Zim. so didn't test it.
Can probably buy some 375 H&H ammo in Bots. when you get there or if he is using your 375, just take an extra box yourself & let him pay you for it.

I have taken 22 mag, 425 WR and 450/400 3 1/4" to Zim on occasion. Never had rifles in those calibers. I put them on my firearms permit application and they were never checked or commented on.

Depends on the airline and depends on the country of destination and the country (countries) of transit. Several variables there.

I am headed to tanzania for 21 day hunt and my cousin in going with me for 10 day hunt he is using my rifles but he has a bag with some ammo and has a netherlands permit for ammo only.maybe that is different since he is hunting and just using my guns but they said no problem.

If your friend is traveling with you, this can easily be solved. It sounds like the major reason you want him to carry some ammo is to avoid the 5 kg weight limit for ammo per person. Your friend can put an additional 5 kg of ammo in his luggage, but you claim all the ammo on your firearms license. All you are doing is dividing the ammo between two suitcases, but claiming all the ammo on your license. I've done this multiple times when traveling with my family. It takes a lot of ammo to keep several boys shooting in Africa!

Don't know about Botswana, but when I went to Namibia in June, I put half of my ammo in my wife's luggage to protect against loss of one bag. The airline (South African) told me that since I had two rifles, putting ammo in two people's luggage presented no problem at all. No problem at JFK, with the airline, or with customs in Namibia.

I have put 5 kg in friends suitcase without problems . Once to zimmerman and once to namibia

I went to Namibia and took two rifles. I put one locked box of ammo in my wifes luggage and one in mine. No one asked any questions, and everything went smooth as silk.

No problem splitting ammo into different bags as long as you have rifles for the ammo being carried. I've done this several times.

Another way to look at it is do you need more than 100 rounds? Your 5kg airline allowance will just about cover 100 375 cartridges.
