AfrikaanderCZ 550 conversion (from .458 WM to .458 Lott)
Hi you all
I had been offered a CZ 550 Magnum Safari (.458 WM) at a rather good price .... dont know much about this model and would like your advise:
Is this a good CZ model? (will apreciate knowing its pros an cons, at least briefly)
Can it be easily converted in a 458 Lott? I mean without weaken it in any aspect (since the higher pressures developed by the lott cartridge)
and last is it so any rifle in 458 lott can also fire any 458 Win ammo aswell?
Thank you all in advance
Happens every day. Everybody and their dog has done it, even me.

Mostly just needs ramp and rail work to get it to feed.

lawndartGood Rifle.
Easily converted. Safe.
As daddy Ray says, you will need to add crossbolts and have it well bedded.
And a nice thick recoil pad.
You can make a Lott easy with the CZ as the magazine box etc. is already the correct size. In most cases it just requires a reamer. I have had several done for clients and all on CZ or the old Brno's. Have yet to have a problem.
Yes, you can fire 458 Win Mag in the Lott if needed however I would only do it if I just had too.
Now we await the answers from all of the forum gunsmiths.

Andrea Sandri-BorianiAfrikaander,
Are you based in South Africa? Veon Kruger in Tzaneen has a lot of experience in Lott conversions.
This is probably the Right thing to do with a cz 550 in .458 winnie and I had my .458 win mag cz 550 converted to the lott. I added two extra crossbolts had the action and lugs bedded and added a barrel band as well as some buff horn where the front for end swivel stud used to be. It is a nice little rig and the hogs back stock handles the recoil fine thankyou

I have leupold 2.5x compact in warne QD's mounted on it and the rig is sighted in for 500 gr woodleigh softs...onl;y shot a couple of grassy's and two foxes with it to date.....and they where with some loads I worked up with 400 gr speers.

Dago RedCorrect me if I am wrong, the Lott will operate at lower pressures than the Winchester, if going for the same velocities (or those "advertised" for the 458 win). That is one of the reasons I am having my 458 win. opened up.

AtkinsonDago Red,
That is correct...
However it will also crank out 2350 FPS with 84 grs. of IMR-4320 behind a 500 gr. woodleigh soft of solid, at the same pressure or less than the recommended book loads in the reloading manuals...
It is a very practical conversion and you can run a 500 gr. bullet at 2250 to 2300 at very mild pressure....
The big cz 550 action is great for the conversion as well. Plenty of room in the mag box & you can get 5 rounds in the mag and one up the spout...plenty of heavy lott rounds to get you out of strife........the foxes and grassy's I have shot could have charged !!
