Safari operators urged to develop communities

Government has been urged to formulate policies that compel safari operators to contribute meaningfully to communities they operate in. Traditional leaders here said the operators did not make any meaningful contribution to the development of the areas despite making “super profits”.
The chiefs were speaking at a meeting with Zanu-PF national political commissar Cde Webster Shamu and the party’s leadership in the district at the weekend.
Chief Sikalenge said safari operators were neglecting the area.
“Government, through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Management, should put in place laws which force these operators to at least give back something to local communities.”
He said safari operators and poachers destroy the environment without beneficiation of the society.
“They are the ones who use the roads, which are deteriorating everyday, but they don’t bother to help in taking care of them. There will be nothing to talk about in the next few years if this continues.”
Chief Sinansengwe told Cde Shamu that people from Binga were not benefitting from fishing activities in their area. He said villagers did not have fishing permits.
He said the permits were given to people mainly from Kariba, Bulawayo and Harare at the expense of locals.
“Out of the 300 permits allowed here, I don’t think there are more than ten people in Binga who have them,” he said.
“Officials from the National Parks and Wild Life Management have failed the people of Binga.”
Chief Sinansengwe said: “The communities are not benefiting from the revenue from Lake Kariba and Zambezi despite being a few metres away from the lake.
“Our schools and clinics and the general infrastructure are in a sorry state but revenue from the lake is being taken away and we want that corrected in line with Government laws.”
Cde Shamu said he will engage Environment and Natural Resources Minister Francis Nhema to address the issue. He said corrupt elements in societies were derailing Government’s indigenisation and economic empowerment drive.
“You are the people who should benefit from the wealth that is in your area. This is the only way that will make you independent economically and we will be behind you.”
Cde Shamu urged party members to unite and concentrate on defeating imperialism.
He reiterated that Zanu-PF would not tolerate the imposition of candidates as this had proved costly to the party in the 2008 harmonised elections.
Zanu-PF politburo member Cde Samuel Mugande said the district was ready for the elections.
“We are now ready for the fight and we have confidence that the results will be in our favour this time,” he said.

From Ras ben Sakka to Cape Agulhas, the same blame. Blame the White Devils and at the same time, demand / beg for money to ease the pain of Imperial Colonialism. Damn motor vehicles, Western clothing, Western medicine, electricity, brick and mortar, even concrete buildings, and worst of all, damn "demokracy."

What a coincidence that the old communist "equal shares for all" reteric should be spouted at the time they consider the area " ready for the elections"
I am sure that all the outfitters will be grinding their teeth because in my experience communal councils never miss an opportunity to hit on them for contributions for all manner of causes. I have even known councillors ask for diesel for their vehicle to be able to attend Zanu P F meetings.
Like all things in Zim it is also normal and expected for most of any contribution to end up in the pockets of the local senior officials.
That's how African equal sharing works !!

These communities would benefit from the hunting if the head councilors and party members were not siphoning off all the money paid to them by the operators.This is the money they are supposed to use to rebuild their schools,clinics etc. Every time a operator has tried to help them by erecting elephant proof fences so that their crops are not destroyed, they steal the fencing and make snares out the cable.Also a reason that most guys do not fix the roads is it makes it harder for poachers to drive into the areas unless they have 4X4 vehicles.Must be noted when we were farmers, we had to pay our councils thousands of dollars to fix our roads,but this never happened,and if you failed to make payments they would send a messenger of the court to seize your tractors etc. Hence they,the community and chiefs in these areas are to blame, but it is always easy to point the finger.

They still 'want' after stealing and destroying all of the privately owned ranches and farms?

Exactly what I was thinking.

Safari operators are going to be required to do the gov'ts own job for them.

Seeing the black gov't is a total failure except for a history of theft and murder.
