It depends on which record book you're referring to but the obvious answer is to look in that particular book.

Firstly who is they?

Do you mean Rowland Ward or SCI etc?

Modern measuring method for cats is skull measurements is length + width across the zygomatic arches but some trophy books did measure between the pegs or around the curves in the old, old days but to get that data you'd probably have to pick up an old trophy book of whatever record organisation you wanted to refer to and of course, the 'record' will increase in subsequent editions. (So it's not easy to give you an answer)

Rowland Ward is "THE" "book of records " right?
The length/weight record would be in what kind of book? or maybe no records exist for these measurements?
Has a true "Eleven Foot Lion" tip of nose to tip of tail ever been recorded?

Interesting as I have never measured the length of a Lion. Not even sure how to? Along the curves? Skin on?

Like a bear hide?

It is for me but I'm a traditionalist and also British by birth & English by the grace of God however, most of those colonial American types tend to go for SCI as an easier (to get into) alternative.

Both SCI & RW now use skull measurements & have done for a great many years (I think SCI always have done IIRC)but your best bet would probably be to contact RW & ask them what year they switched from overall length or around the curves to skull measurement & then ask them to check the book from the preceding year for the longest lion.

The reason for the switch incidentally was that an overall length measurement can by manipulated by stretching & therefore wasn't anywhere near accurate.

You also need to bear in mind that not all trophies taken were measured/recorded (probably the majority were not) & some of these can be found in museums around the world. The Natural History museum in London for example has many hundreds of African (and other) trophies in their store rooms that would totally rewrite the record books if they were ever measured/entered but they take the attitude that it's irrelevant to them because they're a scientific institution rather than a sporting one.

IIRC it was around the curves for cats & between the pegs for flatdogs but both can be stretched so there was a lot of dodgy dealings going on.

FWIW, I have an old (1923 11th edition) of the RW Sportsman's Handbook & there's a pic of a tiger skin in there with the following commentary:

"Shot by the Marahajah of Cooch Behar. Length before skinning, 10 ft. 1 1/2 inches: Dried 11 ft. 7 inches"

Which would probably suggest they were using RTC or BTP measurements for cats at that time at least.

If it'll help the 1899 edition of RW show Vaughan Kirby as having a lion of 10' 5" before skinning & 10' 10 1/2" stretched tip to tip with a cleaned skull of 16 1/2" + 10"

That would indicate skull was also recorded but I'm 99.99999999% sure that ranking was on length in the early days.

Heaviest Wild Lion was a man eater shot in 1936 690#

Largest RECORDED. It could well be larger have also been taken and not recorded but glad you at least found a satisfactory answer.

The heaviest wild lion was a marauding man-eater and cattle thief that was shot in 1936 at Jeppes reef and weighed at the Hectorspriut railway station to be 690 lbs. Of note it's stomach was empty - no body parts! With a full meal it could have topped 750. Shot with a 9mm Mauser. Skull and length not measured. Lennox Anderson also shot a 50" buffalo that is in the Buufalo bar in Hectorspriut
