Cdr_McBraggHas anyone ever had an eland get away wounded?
Just wondering - caliber, bullet, circumstances.

zimbabweModel 70 custom 375H&H with 260gr Nosler partition. Shot was a left rear quartering shot for the heart lungs from about 75yards. Bullet struck a mopane about 2 feet from the eland and the bullet struck the eland in the left hip which it penetrated to the bone and broke the bone embedding itself in the bone. This ocurred at approximately 8am. We tracked the Eland till 2 PM the FOLLOWING day when we found it bedded and killed it. We tracked the Eland from 8am till 8pm the first day and from dawn till 2pm the second day in the finest example of tracking I have EVER observed. All types of terrain and even thru a herd of Wldebeest. Father/son team of trackers that just seemed to have the proverbial sixth sense attributed to many native trackers. I do love hunting Eland. I won't turn down a big Eland steak either.

Hog KillerShot a young eland for meat. here in Texas. 458Lott 400gr X bullet, ~2500fps, at a round 150 yds. I hit the point of the left shoulder with an exit in the right flank. I finally found it and finished it after a half an hour of seaching. The "guide" was of NO help in this.

GanyanaClient shot one on the point of the shoulder with a 7mm rem Mag at 20m range. Ammo was Rem (but which I do not recall it was 20 years back- seem to recal 150grn). Shot the same Eland nearly three weeks later with another client. Ugly wound full of screw worm but quite shallow. Bullet had not broken bone or penetrated chest cavity.

500nitroclient shot a bull about 65m away, quartering away up a ridge. Shot appeared to enter the ribcage slightly high but should have been a telling shot.
2 days of tracking, and eland never recovered. 375 H&H, 300gr Barnes, 2380fps.

Colonel_KlinkSounds like a big bore plus shot placement are called for

Mike SmithShot placement. I shot my 1st eland (cape) with a 300wm. No second shot. It never moved. Complete penetration with bullet just under the skin on off side of heart. Second eland (livingstone) shot with 7mm at a full run. It piled up within 20 yards. Bigger gun only necesarry if you place the shot poorly. Even then it is only a little more forgiving. I have chased a couple for other people, can make for a long day when it happens.

Nope. Never lost one. Of course I've only taken one.

GanyanaHave shot alot of eland for both rations and lion bait - and only ever lost the one described above. Since I have a general pollicy of asking a client to bring a .338 or up on lion hunts that is generally what they shoot their eland with

. I have shot eland with both a 7x57 and , generally with my 9,3x62. For eland I use the speer 270 grn sp which is hardly a "premium" bullet but at 2300fps it holds together well enough for any reasonable shot.
For a client after a trophy I would recomend something better in the bullet department. Bear in mind thant ranges where I hunt are often long - but may be very very close! In a 'regular' caliber you could use any heavy weight bonded core bullet like a Nosler accubond or Norma Oryx very happily. If you are using a high velocity 'magnum' you need something that will still work on that odd close encounter - a partition, a TSX a norhtfork...

mouse93A friend of mine lost one - he was using 8x68S with factory 180gr RWS Cone points - going ~3250fps - ended up in thick - close shooting - 3 confirmed hits and 3 days later they abandoned the track...
