I ordered a CITES permit about a year ago for the hunt to Tanzania last July with my son. I needed one for a leopard that I hoped he would shoot. We have almost the same name in that I'm the 3rd and he's the 4th. On our hunt I was listed as the hunter and he as the "companion." I ordered the permit and it came in my name since I knew the leopard, if he got one, would be sent to me (not to mention the fact that I would be listed as the hunter).
Today I got an e-mail saying that because my son shot the leopard that the permit I have cannot be used. They want me to order a new one. Does that sound right? Why not just send it to me using the one we have?

I assume the e-mail in question was from TGTS. I also assume that they are not leading you astray and you should jump through the hoops. I expect they are trying to avoid some snafu with US, F&W when they ship the leopard. I can sympathize with your frustration but I would take their advise to the letter.

Yes, it was TGTS that I heard from. I somewhat questioned why the one I have wouldn't work, considering we have essentially the same name, but have not heard back from them yet. So do you think the USF&W would even notice a "III" vs an "IV" on the permit? I guess I had be prepared in case they do.....

You can order one "retroactively" so to speak. Just don't tell them you have already shot it. I don't understand why it took a year. It should not take that long.

It didn't take a year for the permit to come in--only about 6 weeks. Only when the trohpy is ready to shipped to the USA is it actually needed, aside from copies being sent to various places before the hunt.
