They dont really look like 9.9 pound rifles with that long skinny barrel.
Are they really that (sensibly) heavy?
Andy
The Gibbs is heavy. The 404 is probably about 9.7 - 9.9 pounds, with the 450 lighter since they have the same barrel contour

steve505Andy,
spoke with cz and "The muzzle diameter on the 505 is .825, and .670 on the others.
10 March 2005, 08:34
new_guydid anyone notice there that they say the 450 Rigby was originally introduced for Double Rifles?

10 March 2005, 14:17
Mike375I think the first Nitro was the 450 and introduced by Rigby.
.670 seems a bit light for the 450 Rigby.

new_guyYea, but that's a completely different cartridge than the one they're chambering the CZ in.
11 March 2005, 02:04
BFaucettYeah, CZ got a little confused about which ".450 Rigby" is which. They're only off by 97 years or so. What's a few years among friends? CZ really needs to correct their sales literature. It makes them look foolish considering the target market for these rifles.
-Bob F.
Introduced by John Rigby as a smokeless round in 1898 the .450 Nitro Express has a straight, rimmed case derived from the original black powder cartridge. It was a standard calibre offered by the English Gun Trade.
.450 Rigby Magnum Rimless introduced by Rigby in 1995.
(This is the one CZ is chambering in their Safari Classics series.)

SevensAnyone know if there's commercial 450 rigby ammo available? I've always wanted a 450.
11 March 2005, 04:40
Mike375Al
As far as I know it only comes from Kynoch and I suppose some custom ammo makers.
Essentially it is a 416 Rigby Improved necked up to 458 calibre.
Perhaps if the CZ-USA rifle sells well then Norma might make brass for the 450 Rigby.
Mike
Sevens,
I think American Hunting Rifles in Montana loads 450 Rigby and builds custom CZ's chambered for it.
I believe they use the excellent Kodiak bonded soft point. dont recall what they use for a solid.

new_guyHas anyone necked it (416 rigby) up to .475?
- not that I can imagine shooting the damn thing (if it's anything close to a 460 wby)
would there be enough shoulder left to head-space?
11 March 2005, 05:56
Mike375new-guy,
There is a chap on Big Bores who calls himself 470Mbogo and he has a wildcat that is basically a 416 Improved necked to 475.
However, he obtains 3 inch 416 Rigby cylinders and necks those down. They came from Bell/MAST but may now be from Quality cartridge. A few people have the 470Mbogo wildcat.
