Five people were arrested in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday for illegal possession of animal trophies.
’’The five people were found in possession of ivories, horse skin and pieces of antelope meat,’’ Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Alfred Tibaigana said on Wednesday.
They were transporting the trophies from Morogoro to Dar es Salaam, he said.
The suspects were arrested in Tabata Matumbi area in the city, he said.
’’They were in possession of thirteen ivories, a horse skin and fourteen pieces of antelope meat,’’ he said.
Ladislaus Ludovick, a Wildlife Officer was informed by a Good Samaritan that a vehicle with registration number T552 AAM, enroute to Dar es Salaam from Ngerengere in Morogoro was carrying trophies.
’’After getting the information the police investigated on the issue and managed to arrest the suspects as soon as they arrived in the city,’’ he said.
Tibaigana said the suspects are: Abdallah Mshamu (30), Hamad Ramadhan (46), Mgeni Omar (36), Msafiri Abdallah (38) and Kombo Chande (30). All of them reside in Dar es Salaam.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested 18-year-old man after he was found in possession of bhang.
Ismail Mohamed, a resident of Kawe Mzimuni in Dar es Salaam was arrested on Tuesday, the police said.
