Yep, another weird country question! Anyone know if there is any legalized hunting in Mauritania? Dangerous game??

Islamic Republic of Mauritania is mostly sand with more strange illnesses than you can shake a stick at. They are said to be prohunting, a type of pig/hog and some birds. You might check
on Euro Forum as the French still have an in there so hunts may go from there. But I have to ask why? Do you know something or are you as crazy as me?

As Mauritania is in North Africa, I'd think the african forum was the right place to ask, and not the Euro-forum.

As Invader66 said, it's mostly sand. And rock. But on the southern border to Mali, there is quite a lot of bush (Sahel). As for strange diseases, there are no more there than in other african countrys, and it's a reasonably clean country by african standards IMO.

There is a bit of religious fundimentalism there, but it's not a problem as long as you use your head.

Getting around isn't that bad, as the main 2 roads are tarred, and as far as I know, they have now completed a EU financed tar road all the way up to the Moroccan border. This will save you a 3 day trip offroad thru the desert if you want to go north that way. The desert route was more fun though! Besides these few main roads, all others are dirt tracks, sand tracks, and "no tracks".

I know that there were some hunting possibilities in Mauritania a couple of years ago, down near the border to Senegal/Mali. I'll try to see if I can find out more for you.

All in all I found Mauritania an enjoyable country to be in, and we have decided to definatly visit it again in a few years with our kids. If you don't like the desert though, don't bother going there! And there are some areas that are best avoided due to organized bandittry. But as long as you stay away from those areas (if possible) there are not many problems really. Besides the usual police corruption found in west/north africa, which is often a bit tougher then in eastern/southern africa.

Go to the "Sahara Travel Forum". There are lots of people there that have been much more in Mauritania than I have. "Many" people go down there every year to explore the desert, and it would suprise me if you didn't get an knowledgable answer there.

The lack of water means no buff, and I have to admit that we didn't see any wildlife even though we went off the beaten track. You will see many goats and camels though. Both dead and dried out, and alive.

Hare, guinea fowl, pigeons and hard to cornered quails.


Not bad but Senegal offer the same with a very wider choice of game and outfitters.
