Most Overrated Dangerous Game Hunt

If Buffalo hunting is overrated, you simply did not hunt enough of them, and should again. It is one of the most fantastic exciting hunts African hunting offers. A tough, potentially dangerous quarry, that weighs over a ton, sneaky as hell when he wants to be and moody like a soon to be ex-wife. They smell, they are vocal, and they leave nice tracks to follow.....what can be over rated about that? Given, they do not live at 12,000 feet in the snow and you generally speaking, do not have to eat out of a tin and sleep in a shitty two man tent to hunt them....but then again, that is why you come to Africa?

I do not have enough experience with Elephants to give myself out as a expert, specially with the likes of Buzzie, Karl, Ivan and others on here that hunts them daily. But I have hunted them in Mozambique and South Africa, and I can tell you there is NOTHING over rated about Elephants.....

Leopards? Blind and bait at night, Blind and bait in day time, hounds? They are all fantastic experiences in their own right, made less so fantastic if you do not get the bastard and you have to fork out the day fees.....Def. cannot be classified as "over rated". Maybe the killing of the beast is when it comes to it, but then you should seriously consider stopping hunting all together Sir!

Lions? There is in my book only one hunt that compares to a tracking Lion hunt on foot, and that is Buffalo. Def. not over rated.

Hippo, Rhino and Crocs.....Now these might be over rated, but most hunters know that before they fork out the money to look for these trophies, and therefore they are not "RATED" as much of DG....unless your PH can put on a great show......My own experience with problem Hippo is def. NOT in this "overrated" category....but that is different from the method most are killed when sports hunted....in the water.. The offset of hunting these trophies (if classified as over rated) is that they are generally hunted in very scenic areas (The aquatic species speaks for themselves where Rhino in South Africa is generally hunted out of breath taking five start lodges on huge private/government reserves).

This is my honest, humble and of course biased opinion :-)
I do not think we should ever go down the road of ever "branding" any DG as over rated....

FWIW.....what animals killed and injured the most professionals in the last 5 years?

I have never baited for lion but I suspect it isn't much different from baiting for leopard. I have followed depredating lion tracks on two farms but they avoided us by crossing onto a neighbors property. I think a tracking hunt for a lion would be extremely exciting.

Now, elephant hunting is the apex of hunting, in my opinion. I have hunted elephant more than any other DG and it still thrills me from start to finish. The tracking is a continual learning experience. I learn something new on every track. For starters, when you approach them, whether a single bull or a cow calf herd, their sheer size is guaranteed to intimidate you. Where buff will run on the mere suspicion that you are there, elephants will turn toward you and approach you for a closer look. Learning the correct shot placement from any angle is a challenging goal and it takes a lot of experience to reach that level of expertise.

So I guess the most over rated hunts for me would be buff and leopard and elephant the most enjoyable.

Before anyone argues with my choices, let me say that your choices are most likely based on what you want to get out of the hunt and therefore are just as good as mine.

Off-course and without doubt elephant hunt should be on top, tracking him in bush also you meet others I.e. lion, snake etc..., once you are in the middle of a herd and trying to spot one good trophy, the wind is the wall between you and female having baby with her,, this is the action, is always repeated daily when you start tracking and then reach to them after 3 to 4 hours walking (easy!!!), for me elephant hunt is the ultimate hunting and need strong heart and legs.

That include shooting the bait and sitting in the blind. I have seen some wonderful birds and animals from the leopard blind.
