APBRosenfels / Western Safaris Zimbabwe
I am trying to contact John Rosenfels in Zim after quite a lapse in comms.
has anyone hunted with them in Chewore lately?
I believe they still operate a concession in Chewore North and the last I heard were still operating under John's old safari name of Western Safaris? John's son, James is now the PH I understand?

Adam Clements has booked for them in the past (he may still book for them). I think they hunt in Chewore South.

GanyanaChewore South.
Still going strong, but mainly it seems with repeat clients. I haven't heard john trying to sell any hunting for years.

GanyanaJohns father and my dad used to ride to school together in the 1930's- on horseback. Max shot a lion one day trying to stalk their horses- he was 13, and the oldest of the 4, although all carried their rifles to school.
My dad ran the lost horizon mine on the banks of the chewore in the escarpemnt in the 40's and took john for his first elephant hunt in what is now Chewore South in the mid 50's, so John has certainly had a long association with the area.

Are they part of the Pioneer Rosenfels family, I think there was a Rosenfels or two back in the early days of my time in Rhodesia ( sixties ) whom was a [top target shooting champion] if my memory serves me correct !

That is the same family. John and several others within the family [brothers and nephews] have competed at Bisley etc.Pretty useful shots!
They operated some wonderful farms west of Bulawayo throughout the last 100 plus years until just recently of course.
A great bunch of people whom I personally have not seen for 10 years but will make contact again because I am thinking of making a trip to Zim next year maybe driving?

Thanks for your personal background. Certainly a small world at times? I know that the farming community in Zim used to be tight knit with people throughout the country knowing each other through sport; farming interests and / or hunting.
Is Max still around? I can remember him from many years ago when he was still PH in Chewore.
He was hunting a German and John reckoned they both were reliving the WWII because each day they would try to kill each other by outwalking the other! If my memory serves me correctly Max used to carry a .416 Rigby bolt?
