Legal minimum cartridge for Lion in Zim
In the lion section of his "perfect shot" book, Kevin Robertson infers that in Zim it is legal to shoot lion with a 7mm at 3000 fps (though he does not recommend this). Is this true? I thought that the energy requirements required at least a 9.3X62 for all DG except leopard.

I pilfered these from a safari website. You may want to check the website that shakari has set up at www.shakariconnection.com/

Below are the legal requirements for weapons to be used on game in Zimbabwe.

For Buffalo, Elephant & Hippopotamus, a bullet with a diameter of 9.3mm producing a minimum of 5.3 Kilojoules of energy at the muzzle. The lightest caliber to be used on these animals is .375 H&H Magnum.

For Eland, Giraffe & Lion, a bullet with a minimum diameter of 7mm producing 4.3 kilojoules of energy at the muzzle.

For Leopard, Cheetah, Crocodile, Spotted Hyena, Sable, Burchell's Zebra, Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Waterbuck, Tsessebe & Nyala, a bullet with a minimum diameter of 7 mm producing 3 kilojoules of energy at the muzzle.

For Impala, Reedbuck, Warthog, Bushpig and all other small animals a bullet with a minimum diameter of 5.6mm producing 850 joules of energy at the muzzle.

Took my Lion from the Zambezi valley, Zimbabwe with a 9.3x62 firing 286grn Woodleigh round nose soft bullets at 2340fps.
Can't remember if it is minimum or if 7mm is.

While I would never violate Zims legal requirements, IF I had my 308 and saw a lion I would not hesitate to shoot it...

But I would not hunt a lion on purpose with anything less than a 9,3x74R double rifle...

I used my 450/400 3 1/4" double, with scope, on my lion, on a stalk hunt, and it worked PERFECT.

I cannot think of a better, more PERFECT gun for lion, whether in a blind over bait or on a stalking hunt, than a scoped double from 9,3x74R to a 450/400 scoped double.

For "Bolt Rifle Trash" there is nothing wrong with a 9,3x62 and the Woodleigh bullet. thumb Big Grin

That is my bullet of choice in my 9,3x74R double.

Class A game - Minimum Energy was dropped to 5kj in 1999- so effective legal minimum is 9,3x62

Class B - Lion, Girrafe and eland - 7mm Mag

Clas C - Larger plains game inc leopard and croc- 7x57

The interesting point on both clas B&C game is ...is the .270 cal legal. The intention was that the .270 win was not legal for larger plains game and restricted to impala warthog etc...but the wording of the SI was done by someone who knew sweef F A about firearms so the wording is open to 'negotiation'.

What would you want your client to bring for lion?

N E 450 - For a walk and stalk lion I recomend a .375 H&H and .338 win is minimum. From a blind...you could probably use a 7x57 with perfect satisfation

One would assume the correct answer is a full checking account.

I used my scoped 450/400 3 1/4" double for lion.

I also had a 9,3x74R scoped double with me and would not have hesitated to use it, it was my lion gun on my first Safari, but no lions hit our baits...

The 450/400 worked perfectly...

450/400 works well. My uncle has a Woodward double in this caliber and has shot a couple hundred lions with it - he has no scratch marks either!
